Monthly Travel Guide

Thailand in September

September is the wettest month in most of Thailand and sees the fewest tourists. The Gulf coast, usually reliable, also begins to be affected by the northeast monsoon transition — Koh Samui in particular sees heavy rain. This is the true off-season. However, for travellers who don't mind rain, September offers unbeatable prices, empty temples, and a rawly beautiful Thailand. The Vegetarian Festival typically falls in late September or October.

Weather by Region

North (Chiang Mai)

Peak rainy season. Flooding is possible in low-lying areas. Chiang Mai 23–31°C. Some attractions may close due to flooding or road washouts.

Central (Bangkok)

Bangkok's wettest month. Flooding common in many districts. Temperatures 26–32°C. Best month to stay indoors and explore museums.

South — Gulf Coast

Rain begins increasing. Koh Samui starts seeing significant rain. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao still manageable but showers more frequent.

South — Andaman Coast

Heavy monsoon. Phuket and Krabi at their wettest. Many operators closed. Not recommended for beach holidays.
