Monthly Travel Guide
Thailand in January
January is one of the best months to visit Thailand. The cool season is in full swing: temperatures across the North and Central regions are comfortable (20–30°C), skies are largely clear, and the southern Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta — is in its dry-season prime. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) can see some residual rain from the northeast monsoon, but it usually clears by mid-month. Expect peak crowds and prices at the most popular resorts.
Weather by Region
North (Chiang Mai)
Cool and dry. Chiang Mai averages 15–28°C. Mornings can be chilly (below 15°C at elevation). Haze from agricultural burning begins to build toward month's end.
Central (Bangkok)
Warm and dry. Bangkok averages 20–32°C. Low humidity, clear skies, and pleasant evenings make sightseeing comfortable.
South — Gulf Coast
Transitional. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan see the tail end of the northeast monsoon — short showers possible, especially in the first two weeks. Sea can be choppy.
South — Andaman Coast
Prime dry season. Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Lanta enjoy clear skies, calm seas, and low humidity. Excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling.
