Quick Answer
International Schools in Thailand
A guide to choosing the right school for your children — curricula, cities, and what it actually costs.
Thailand has a well-developed international school sector, concentrated in Bangkok but with solid options in Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya. Schools following British, American, IB, and Australian curricula are all available, and Thailand attracts experienced international teaching faculty partly because of its quality of life for expat teachers. For families relocating to Thailand, the quality and availability of international schooling is often the single most important practical consideration after housing.
The costs are significant — international school fees in Bangkok rival those in Singapore and Hong Kong for the best schools, and represent the largest single expense for most expat families. But the quality at the top schools is genuinely excellent, and the international school system creates a social community for expat children that makes the transition to living abroad significantly easier.
Bangkok International Schools
Bangkok has the widest selection of international schools in Thailand. The most prestigious are: Bangkok Patana School (British curriculum, IB — one of Asia's most respected international schools, fees 500,000–750,000 THB/year), NIST International School (IB only — consistently top-ranked, very competitive for places, fees 530,000–760,000 THB/year), ISB (International School Bangkok — American curriculum/IB, large campus, strong sports facilities, fees 540,000–800,000 THB/year), and KIS International School (IB, smaller and known for community feel). The British Columbia School, Shrewsbury International, and Harrow International round out the top tier. Mid-tier schools offering similar curricula at lower fees include St Andrews International, Traill International, and Bromsgrove International.
Chiang Mai International Schools
Chiang Mai's international school sector is smaller but genuine. The best options are: CMIS (Chiang Mai International School — American curriculum, K–12, fees 250,000–380,000 THB/year, strong community), NIST-affiliated DARA Academy, Prem Tinsulanonda International School (IB boarding and day school, one of Asia's better boarding options, fees 500,000–900,000 THB/year for boarding), and American Pacific International School (APIS). Grace International School is a smaller Christian-affiliated option. The range is narrower than Bangkok but adequate for most families, and the lower cost of living in Chiang Mai partly offsets the smaller school selection.
Phuket and Pattaya
Phuket has several international schools to serve its significant expat community: British International School Phuket (BISP — British curriculum/IB, excellent facilities including elite sports academy, fees 380,000–620,000 THB/year), HeadStart International (American curriculum), and QSI International School of Phuket. Pattaya: Regents International School (British curriculum, well-established), St Andrews International School (multiple Bangkok campuses plus Pattaya), and Garden International School. For expats in Hua Hin, Bangkok Patana and ISB have satellite campuses, and some families commute to Bangkok private day schools on the train for secondary schooling.
Choosing a Curriculum
British curriculum (IGCSE/A-Level): best if you plan to apply to UK universities or other British-system countries. Strong academic rigour, well-understood by admissions offices worldwide. IB (International Baccalaureate): the most portable qualification internationally, valued by universities in North America, Europe, and beyond. More holistic than pure exam-based curricula. American curriculum (AP/SAT): best for US university applications. Familiar for American families and recognised widely. Australian curriculum: available at a few schools, primarily popular with Australian families. In practice, all major curricula open doors to global universities — choose based on where your children are likely to end up for university, your family's background, and the specific school quality rather than curriculum alone.
Fees, Registration, and Availability
Top Bangkok international school fees run 500,000–800,000 THB/year ($14,000–22,000), with a capital levy or building contribution of 200,000–500,000 THB paid once on entry. Mid-tier schools run 250,000–450,000 THB/year. Chiang Mai schools are lower: 200,000–450,000 THB/year. Most schools require: school records and transcripts, language assessment, interview, and sometimes academic testing. Popular schools have waiting lists — apply 12–18 months before your intended start date for top Bangkok schools. Registration fees are typically non-refundable. Many schools offer sibling discounts. Some employers (particularly large multinationals) include school fee allowances in expat packages — confirm this before negotiating your employment contract.
