Thailand Beach Trip: 10 Days on the Best Islands

Thailand's islands deserve their own dedicated trip. This 10-day route hops between the Andaman's top beaches — Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Lanta — with day trips to Phi Phi and Railay, keeping flights to a minimum and beach time to a maximum.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Arrive Phuket

    Phuket
    relaxed pace

Unlike a Bangkok-first trip, arriving straight into Phuket means the beach starts on day one rather than after a city stopover — check-in, a first swim, and Promthep Cape at the end of the day for the sunset views the headland is known for. There's no cultural sightseeing to fit in today, which is the whole point of a beach-first itinerary.

    • Arrive HKT, check in
    • Kata or Karon beach afternoon
    • Sunset at Promthep Cape
    Kata or Karon beach hotel$35·$100·$280
  2. 2

    Phi Phi Islands Day Trip

    Phi Phi Islands
    packed pace

Doing the Phi Phi run on day two rather than later in the trip means tackling the longest, most tour-dependent day early while everyone is still fresh — three stops by speedboat, with Loh Samah Bay's snorkelling as the calmer close after Maya Bay's crowds.

Watch out: This tour runs to the operator's schedule, so an early pickup from your Phuket hotel is non-negotiable on only your second morning in the country.

    • Speedboat to Phi Phi Don
    • Maya Bay & Viking Cave
    • Snorkeling Loh Samah Bay
    Phuket beach hotel$50·$110·$270
  3. 3

    Phang Nga Bay

    Phuket
    packed pace

Two big boat tours in a row is a genuine physical ask, and this one trades Phi Phi's open water for Phang Nga's calmer limestone karst scenery and a stilt village that's walkable rather than another beach stop. It's still a full day, just a gentler one than yesterday.

    • James Bond Island tour
    • Sea cave kayaking
    • Muslim fishing village stilts
    Phuket beach hotel$45·$110·$260
  4. 4

    Ferry to Krabi

    Krabi
    relaxed pace

After two consecutive tour days, the ferry crossing to Ao Nang is a legitimate rest even though it's technically transport — no snorkelling stops, no schedule to keep beyond boarding on time, just open water and then a beach afternoon on arrival.

    • Ferry or speedboat to Ao Nang
    • Ao Nang Beach afternoon
    • Beachside restaurant dinner
    Ferry Phuket–Krabi (~1.5 hr)Ao Nang beach resort$40·$100·$250
  5. 5

    Railay Beach

    Krabi
    moderate pace

Railay's total lack of road access is the defining fact of the day — everything runs on longtail boat timing rather than a schedule you control, so build in patience rather than a fixed plan. Rock climbing at sunset is for those who want it; Phra Nang Cave Beach on its own fills an afternoon easily.

Watch out: Longtail crossings to Railay can be suspended in rough conditions, since there is no road alternative if the sea is uncooperative.

    • Longtail to Railay — no road access
    • Phra Nang Cave Beach
    • Rock climbing at sunset
    Ao Nang beach resort$40·$100·$250
  6. 6

    4 Islands Snorkel

    Krabi
    packed pace

This is the third multi-stop boat tour in six days, and by now the format is familiar — short windows at several islands rather than long stretches at one. Tub Island's sandbar tends to be the highlight; treat the coral stops at Koh Chueak and Koh Maa as a bonus rather than the main event.

    • Four Islands boat tour
    • Koh Chueak and Koh Maa coral reefs
    • Tub Island sandbar
    Ao Nang beach resort$40·$95·$240
  7. 7

    Ferry to Koh Lanta

    Koh Lanta
    relaxed pace

Koh Lanta is noticeably calmer than anywhere else on this trip so far, and the two-hour ferry over is really the transition between two different kinds of island holiday — busier, tour-driven Krabi behind you, and Klong Dao's quieter stretch ahead. Old Town in the evening is a low-key walk, not a destination in itself.

    • Ferry to quieter Koh Lanta
    • Klong Dao Beach relax
    • Lanta Old Town walk
    Ferry Krabi–Koh Lanta (~2 hr)Koh Lanta beachfront bungalow$35·$90·$230
  8. 8

    Koh Lanta Dive or Snorkel

    Koh Lanta
    packed pace

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang sit further offshore than the reef stops earlier in the trip, and the currents there are noticeably stronger — this is the day for divers with some open-water experience rather than a first attempt. Non-divers get an easier version at Koh Rok, and the beach barbecue in the evening is the same for everyone.

Watch out: Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are known for stronger currents than the shallower snorkel spots earlier in the trip, so conditions matter more here than they have so far.

    • Hin Daeng or Hin Muang dive site (world class)
    • Koh Rok island snorkel trip
    • Beach barbecue
    Koh Lanta beachfront bungalow$50·$120·$280
  9. 9

    Koh Lanta National Park

    Koh Lanta
    relaxed pace

After a demanding dive day, this one is deliberately low-key — a walk through mangrove forest at the island's southern tip and a sunset at Long Beach, with nothing on the water at all. It's the closest thing to a true rest day since arriving in Phuket.

    • Koh Lanta National Park southern tip
    • Mangrove forest walk
    • Sunset Long Beach
    Koh Lanta beachfront bungalow$30·$80·$200

    Depart via Krabi or Phuket

    Krabi
    moderate pace

Which airport you're actually flying from decides how this morning runs — the ferry back to Krabi is the same either way, but a KBV departure leaves more slack than pushing on to HKT. Build the ferry timetable backward from your flight rather than the other way round.

Watch out: Flying out of HKT instead of KBV after the ferry back adds a longer road transfer on top of the crossing, so check which airport your flight actually uses before planning the morning.

    • Ferry back to Krabi
    • Transfer to KBV or HKT airport
    Ferry then taxi to airportN/A$25·$60·$150
