Thailand Andaman Islands: Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lipe & Beyond

Twelve days of progressively more remote islands ahead means today can afford to be nothing more than a swim and a chance to settle into the heat — there's no sightseeing agenda competing for the afternoon, which won't be true again until close to the end of the trip.

Maya Bay's limited entry means the snorkelling stop here is shorter and more managed than the open swimming you'll get at quieter spots later in the trip — worth knowing going in so it doesn't feel rushed by comparison. This is also the busiest, most touristed island of the whole itinerary, a deliberate contrast to where the trip ends up by day twelve.

Watch out: Maya Bay's entry is limited and managed, so this stop moves at the pace set by the numbers allowed in, not by how long you'd like to stay.

This day trades yesterday's open-water speedboat run for calmer, more sheltered scenery — kayaking through sea caves and a stop at a working fishing village are a slower register than Phi Phi's crowds, even though it's still a full day out on the water.

The Tiger Cave Temple hike at the end of the day is a genuine climb rather than a stroll, and doing it at dusk after a ferry crossing and a beach afternoon means starting it with less daylight margin than a morning attempt would give you.

The cliff viewpoint hike here is a proper scramble over rock rather than a marked path, and it takes longer than the short distance on a map suggests. Phra Nang Cave Beach at the bottom is calm enough to spend the whole afternoon at instead, if the climb doesn't appeal after yesterday's ferry crossing.

Stacking a full snorkel tour and a two-hour ferry into the same day is ambitious, and it only works if the morning tour actually returns on time — there's no buffer built in before the afternoon crossing. Old Town's sunset at the end is the reward for a day that moved fast from the first boat onward.

Watch out: The morning snorkel tour has to return in time to make the afternoon ferry, so there's real risk in this day if the boat tour overruns.

Reaching Hin Daeng and Hin Muang means a longer boat ride offshore than any other dive stop on this trip, which is part of why the site is rated so highly — remoteness keeps the reef in better condition than easier-to-reach spots. Koh Rok's shallower water earlier in the day is the better call for anyone snorkelling rather than diving.

Watch out: These are among the more remote dive sites on this stretch of coast, reached only as part of a full-day boat trip rather than a quick hop from shore.

After yesterday's dive day, this one stays almost entirely on land and at walking pace — a boardwalk through mangroves rather than a boat, and a sunset that doesn't require any tour booking at all.

Koh Ngai is noticeably smaller and less developed than anywhere else on this route so far, and the crossing here marks the point where the trip properly leaves the busier islands behind — there's little to do once you land beyond the reef right off the beach and a hammock.

This is the longest single push south in the whole itinerary, and Koh Lipe's isolation is exactly why it takes this much travel to reach — Walking Street's beach-village layout is small enough to get your bearings in during the same afternoon you arrive.

With no fixed onward transport pressing on today, this is the most relaxed full day since Koh Ngai — Koh Adang and Koh Rawi are close enough for an easy snorkel trip, and Sunrise Beach in the morning is worth the earlier start for the emptier sand.

The route home splits here in a way no other day on the trip does — back north to Pak Bara pier and on into the Thai transport network, or south across the water into Malaysia at Langkawi, which is a genuine international crossing rather than another inter-island ferry.

Watch out: The Langkawi option crosses an international border, not just a stretch of sea, so it carries its own passport and immigration formalities that the inter-island ferries elsewhere on this trip don't.
