14 Days in Thailand: North to South in Depth

Two weeks is long enough that today can be genuinely idle — the transfer from Suvarnabhumi and a plate of street food nearby is the entire plan, and there's no benefit to squeezing in sightseeing on a jet-lagged first evening. The pace only picks up tomorrow.

This day sets the template the rest of the trip's temple visits follow: cover the Grand Palace early before the crowds thicken, let Wat Pho's covered halls offer shade through the middle of the day, and finish on the river rather than on foot. It's a full day, but with twelve more ahead there's no need to compress it further.

Watch out: Bare shoulders or knees will get you turned away at the Grand Palace gate, or steered towards a sarong rental you didn't plan for.

Three very different registers in one day — a sprawling market, a quiet house museum, and a chaotic food crawl after dark — work because each one is short enough on its own not to exhaust the others. Jim Thompson House runs guided tours in fixed groups, so it's worth treating as the one fixed appointment in an otherwise loose day.

The move north is a full change of register from Bangkok's scale and noise, and the moat walk in the afternoon is really just decompression time before a khantoke dinner — a seated, multi-course northern Thai meal with performance — closes the evening properly rather than casually.

Going up for sunrise means being on the mountain before the tour buses fill the car park, and it leaves the rest of the morning free for Wat Chedi Luang back in the Old City at an easy pace. The night market in the evening needs no timing strategy at all, unlike the temple visit.

Watch out: Sunrise at Doi Suthep means an early departure in the dark — worth confirming transport the night before rather than trying to arrange it at dawn.

With a long day trip to Chiang Rai coming tomorrow, this is really the trip's last unhurried day in Chiang Mai itself, even though it packs a sanctuary visit and a cooking class into it. The Night Bazaar afterward is easy to skip if the day has already run long — nothing here depends on catching it fresh.

Six hours of driving bracket whatever time is actually spent at the temples and the Golden Triangle viewpoint, so this reads as a long day on the road with three stops rather than a leisurely sightseeing day. Whether you return to Chiang Mai or stay over in Chiang Rai changes how the onward travel tomorrow feels.

Watch out: The round trip to Chiang Rai is roughly six hours of driving on top of the sightseeing itself, so this day is mostly transport.

There are two ways to reach Krabi from Chiang Mai and neither is direct, so the routing itself — a straight flight to KBV or a flight to HKT plus a transfer — decides how much of the day survives for Krabi Town's waterfront in the evening. Seafood dinner is the one certainty regardless of which route you take.

Watch out: Krabi's own airport has fewer direct connections than Phuket's, so the CNX–HKT-plus-transfer routing can eat more of the day than the flight time alone suggests.

Railay has no road in, so the longtail crossing is not optional scenery but the only way there and back, and it's worth building the rest of the day around whatever the boats are doing rather than the other way round. Climbing or kayaking is an add-on for whoever wants it; Phra Nang Cave Beach alone is enough for a full afternoon.

Watch out: Railay is reachable only by longtail boat, and choppy conditions can suspend crossings for stretches at a time.

Four stops in one boat day means short windows at each — this is a tour built for breadth over depth, so don't expect long, lingering time at any single island. Tub Island's sandbar is usually the stop people remember; the others blur together by the end of the day.

The two-hour ferry crossing is the whole first half of the day, so arrival time on Koh Lanta decides whether there's real beach time left or just enough for a walk through Old Town before dark. This is a deliberate gear change from Krabi's more organised tourism into somewhere noticeably quieter.

Nothing here is timed against anything else, which after eleven days of flights, ferries and fixed tours is the actual point — the National Park visit and the sunset viewpoint are the only two things worth planning around, and both flex easily.

Three hours on a ferry is a longer crossing than the one that brought you to Koh Lanta, and it lands you back in a noticeably busier destination — Old Town's shophouse streets are a good way to ease into that shift before finishing at Kata Beach for sunset.

Watch out: At three hours, this is the longest ferry leg of the whole trip, and rougher water on the open crossing can make it feel longer.

After two weeks covering the length of the country, the final morning is intentionally empty — a swim or a spa treatment and then the transfer to HKT is all that's scheduled, and neither needs to happen if you'd rather just pack slowly.
