Best Hotels in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is northern Thailand's quieter, more laid-back alternative to Chiang Mai. The city is the gateway to the Golden Triangle, the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten). Most hotels are small guesthouses and boutique properties rather than large chains. Prices are lower than Chiang Mai, and the slower pace suits travellers who want a genuine northern Thai town experience.

Where to Stay in Chiang Rai

City Centre

฿400–3,500/night

Best for: Temples, night market, sightseeing base

The city centre is compact and walkable. Most budget and mid-range guesthouses are within a short walk of the Clock Tower, night bazaar, and bus station. Convenient for day trips to all of Chiang Rai's main attractions.

Rim Kok / Mae Kok Riverside

฿2,500–12,000/night

Best for: Views, luxury resorts, tranquil setting

The Mae Kok River north of the city centre hosts a handful of upmarket resort properties. The Anantara Golden Triangle is a short drive beyond here, in the actual Golden Triangle at the Myanmar and Laos borders.

Doi Mae Salong / Hill Area

฿600–4,000/night

Best for: Trekking, tea culture, hill tribe villages

The hill area northwest of Chiang Rai is Thailand's tea-growing region — Chinese Yunnan-style tea culture, cooler temperatures, and smaller guesthouses. A different experience from the city base.

Booking Tips for Chiang Rai

  • 1

Rent a scooter or hire a driver for the day to see the White Temple, Blue Temple, and Black House in a single circuit — all three are outside the city centre.

  • 2

The Saturday and Sunday walking streets are better than the nightly night bazaar for local food and atmosphere. Saturday is on Tambon Wiang; Sunday is near Pho Khun Mengrai monument.

  • 3

If visiting the Golden Triangle, allocate a full day — it's 90 minutes from Chiang Rai city by road.
