Thailand Gulf Islands: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan & Koh Tao

The three Gulf islands each have a distinct personality: Koh Samui is polished and resort-heavy, Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party but beautiful between parties, and Koh Tao is Thailand's top diving hub. Ferry connections make island hopping effortless.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Arrive Koh Samui

    Koh Samui
    relaxed pace

Whether you fly directly into USM or take the cheaper ferry route via Surat Thani changes how much of the afternoon is actually left for Chaweng Beach — the ferry option costs real hours that the direct flight doesn't. Either way, today is just about getting horizontal on sand before the island-hopping starts properly tomorrow.

Watch out: Flying into USM and taking the ferry via Surat Thani cost very different amounts of the day, so it's worth knowing which route you're on before planning anything else for the afternoon.

    • Fly into USM or ferry from Surat Thani
    • Check in, Chaweng Beach afternoon
    Chaweng Beach guesthouse or resort$35·$95·$250
  2. 2

    Samui Island Tour

    Koh Samui
    moderate pace

This is a loop around the island rather than a single destination — the Big Buddha, the rock formations, and Lamai Beach are spread across different coasts, so getting between them takes a meaningful chunk of the day even before you stop to look at anything.

    • Big Buddha temple Koh Fan
    • Grandfather and Grandmother rocks
    • Lamai Beach afternoon
    Chaweng Beach resort$30·$85·$220
  3. 3

    Ang Thong Marine Park

    Koh Samui
    packed pace

The Emerald Lake hike is the physical centrepiece of an otherwise boat-based day, and it's steeper than the postcard photos suggest — worth pacing yourself for the climb rather than treating the whole tour as passive sightseeing. This is also the last full day on Samui before island-hopping begins, so it's a fitting high point to end on.

    • Boat tour to Ang Thong National Marine Park
    • Snorkeling Emerald Lake hike
    • Return Samui sunset
    Chaweng Beach resort$50·$110·$260
  4. 4

    Ferry to Koh Phangan

    Koh Phangan
    relaxed pace

At half an hour, this is the shortest inter-island hop of the whole trip, which leaves most of the day free for Thong Sala's market and a first look at the quieter north coast beaches rather than eating the day the way longer crossings do later on.

    • Ferry across (30 min)
    • Thong Sala market
    • North coast beaches — Chaloklum or Thong Nai Pan
Ferry USM–KPG (~30 min)Haad Yao or Thong Nai Pan bungalow$30·$80·$200

    Koh Phangan Explore

    Koh Phangan
    relaxed pace

Haad Rin by day looks nothing like Haad Rin on a Full Moon Party night, and it's worth seeing it that way first — quiet, ordinary, easy to misjudge from photos alone. The waterfall and the hammock option are both low-key enough that this day can flex however you're feeling.

    • Haad Rin beach (Full Moon Party venue)
    • Than Sadet Waterfall
    • Jungle yoga or hammock day
    Haad Yao bungalow$30·$75·$190
  6. 6

Full Moon Party or Quiet Beach Day

    Koh Phangan
    moderate pace

Whether this day is a Full Moon Party night or a quiet hike out to Hat Thian depends entirely on the lunar calendar and where it falls against your dates — the itinerary can't decide that for you, only offer both versions. It's worth checking before you arrive on the island, not once you're already there.

Watch out: The Full Moon Party happens once a month, so this day only becomes a party night if your dates happen to line up with the actual full moon.

    • Full Moon Party at Haad Rin (if timing aligns)
    • Or Hat Thian secluded beach hike
    • Beachside bonfire
Haad Rin or Haad Yao bungalow$40·$90·$210
  7. 7

    Ferry to Koh Tao

    Koh Tao
    moderate pace

The two-hour crossing to Koh Tao is longer than yesterday's options within Phangan, and it's worth using the crossing itself to think through which dive shop and course level you actually want, since the booking and briefing happen almost as soon as you land.

    • Ferry to Thailand's dive capital
    • Dive shop booking and briefing
    • Sairee Beach evening
    Ferry KPG–KTT (~2 hr)Sairee Beach dive bungalow$35·$85·$210
  8. 8

    Koh Tao Diving

    Koh Tao
    packed pace

Starting a PADI course and doing fun dives are very different days wearing the same title — a first certification day involves classroom time as well as water time, while fun dives at Chumphon Pinnacle or Sail Rock are more straightforwardly about being underwater. Either way this is a full day before the evening even starts.

    • PADI Open Water Day 1 or fun dives at Chumphon Pinnacle
    • Sail Rock pinnacle option
    • Dive bar evening
    Sairee Beach dive bungalow$60·$120·$260
  9. 9

    Koh Tao Snorkel & Relax

    Koh Tao
    relaxed pace

After a demanding dive day, snorkelling at Shark Bay is a gentler way to still be in the water, and the blacktip reef sharks there are genuinely more nervous of you than the name suggests. Freedom Beach or Aow Leuk in the afternoon is unstructured time before Sairee's sunset closes the island-hopping portion of the trip.

    • Shark Bay snorkel (blacktip reef sharks)
    • Freedom Beach or Aow Leuk cove
    • Sunset Sairee Beach
    Sairee Beach bungalow$30·$80·$200
  10. 10

    Depart

    Koh Tao
    moderate pace

Leaving Koh Tao means a ferry back to the mainland before any onward flight or bus even becomes possible, so the crossing itself is the fixed point of the day rather than the beach time beforehand. Whether you route via Chumphon or Surat Thani depends on where you're actually headed next.

Watch out: There's no airport on Koh Tao, so departure day always starts with a mainland ferry before any onward flight or bus is possible.

    • Morning dive or beach
    • Ferry to Chumphon or Surat Thani, onward travel
    Ferry to mainland then bus/flightN/A$25·$60·$150
