Patong
Phuket's undisputed entertainment capital — busy, brash, and built for tourists

About Patong
Patong is the most developed beach resort in Thailand — a 3-kilometre arc of white sand backed by a dense wall of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shopping that has grown without interruption since the 1970s. It is simultaneously Phuket's most criticised neighbourhood (overcrowded, over-commercialised, fundamentally changed from its original character) and its most visited (because it delivers what a large segment of beach tourists actually want: convenient access to the sea, abundant cheap food and cold beer, and a nightlife scene of considerable scale).
Bangla Road is the axis of Patong's night scene — 400 metres of neon-lit bars, live music venues, and clubs that operates from sundown to well past dawn. The beach itself is wide and regularly cleaned; it is busy but functional. Jungceylon shopping centre is one of the best malls in Phuket and provides air-conditioned relief on hot afternoons. The mountains behind Patong create a dramatic visual backdrop, and several well-maintained viewpoints offer panoramas over the bay.
For families, Patong is increasingly viable outside the Bangla Road area. The northern section of the beach and the streets around it are quieter and more pleasant, and the convenience infrastructure — pharmacies, clinics, ATMs, restaurants with children's menus — is unmatched on the island. For solo travellers, couples on a party holiday, or anyone who wants maximum choice in a single neighbourhood, Patong is the correct choice. For anyone seeking Phuket's more authentic, quieter charms, it is the wrong one.
