About Kata
Kata sits about 17 km south of Patong and represents a different proposition entirely: a genuine beach resort that has managed to remain appealing without tipping into the kind of overdevelopment that defines its northern neighbour. The bay is divided into two beaches — Kata Yai (Big Kata) and Kata Noi (Small Kata) — separated by a headland. Kata Yai is the main resort beach, with a curved arc of golden sand backed by a modest strip of restaurants, guesthouses, and dive shops. Kata Noi is smaller, quieter, and backed by the Katathani Resort; it is one of the prettier beaches on the island.
Kata has been a surfer destination since the 1970s — the bay produces consistent surf between May and October when southwest monsoon swells arrive, and the Kata Surf School and neighbouring Chalong Bay surf spots draw an international wave-riding crowd. Outside surf season the water is calm and excellent for swimming. The diving and snorkelling from Kata is also good, with the offshore reef accessible from the beach and dive operators offering day trips to Phi Phi and the Similan Islands.
The neighbourhood itself has a low-key, unpretentious character that attracts repeat visitors. There are good Thai restaurants serving proper regional food alongside tourist-facing options, a lively but manageable bar scene focused around the main street, and a handful of quality boutique hotels mixed in with the guesthouses and resorts. It feels like a working beach town rather than a pure tourist construct — one of the more liveable stretches of Phuket coastline.
