About Karon

Karon beach stretches for nearly 3 kilometres between the headlands of Kata and Patong, making it the longest beach on Phuket's west coast and one of the least crowded relative to its length. The sand is pale and powdery, the water generally clear, and the lack of overdevelopment gives it a more open feel than either of its famous neighbours. Karon town sits behind the beach with a functional mix of hotels, restaurants, and small shops — pleasant rather than picturesque, but with most visitor needs covered within easy walking distance.

The character of Karon attracts a slightly older, quieter demographic: Scandinavian and Russian package tourists who prefer a large beach with good infrastructure over the party scene in Patong, families who find Patong too overwhelming, and repeat Thailand visitors who want value for money over novelty. The accommodation range is dominated by mid-range hotels and resort complexes; there is good supply at the 1,500-4,000 baht per night tier that is often sold out in Patong. Budget guesthouses are available but fewer than in Kata.

The Karon Viewpoint on the hill road between Kata and Karon gives one of the finest panoramas on the island — three beaches visible simultaneously on a clear day. The Karon Temple market on weekends is a good local market with authentic Thai food. Access to Phuket's diving scene, island hopping, and the cultural sights of Phuket Town is straightforward from here, making Karon a practical all-rounder base.
