About Jomtien

Jomtien sits 3-4 km south of central Pattaya, separated by the Pratumnak Hill, and represents the other face of the resort: quieter, more family-oriented, with a longer, wider beach that is consistently cleaner than Pattaya Beach itself. The promenade along Jomtien Beach Road is pleasant for walking and cycling, and the sea — while not crystal clear — is more swimmable than the main beach. The pace is noticeably slower, the restaurants more local in character, and the accommodation more likely to be a long-stay apartment complex than a short-stay hotel.

Jomtien has become the preferred base for Pattaya's substantial retiree and long-stay expat community, many of whom have lived here for years. Monthly apartment rentals are genuinely competitive — a comfortable one-bedroom with a pool runs 8,000-15,000 baht per month — and the neighbourhood infrastructure supports long-term living well. There are Western supermarkets (Tops), international hospitals within 20 minutes, language schools, and a dense network of businesses catering to expats. The nightlife exists but is scaled back: some beer bar sois and karaoke venues, but the atmosphere is a world away from Walking Street.

For beach holiday visitors who want access to Pattaya's amenities without the noise, Jomtien is the best option. Baht buses connect to Central Pattaya in 20-30 minutes for 10 baht, and the beach itself — particularly the northern section near Dongtan — is more pleasant for swimming and sunbathing. Dongtan Beach at the northern end of Jomtien is well-known as a gay-friendly beach, and the area around it is relaxed and welcoming.
