About Central Pattaya
Central Pattaya is the spine of the city — the dense commercial and entertainment district running along Pattaya Beach Road and Second Road from the Dolphin Roundabout south to Walking Street. It is where the action is loudest and most concentrated: beer bars, neon-lit agogos, Russian and English signage above seafood restaurants, motorbike taxis competing for space with baht buses, and a beach that, while not the most beautiful in Thailand, has been significantly cleaned up in recent years. This is the Pattaya most people have in mind when they think of the city.
The area works exceptionally well as a base for visitors whose primary interest is nightlife, accessible tourism facilities, and the sheer variety of budget-to-mid-range accommodation on every block. Central Road (Third Road) runs parallel to the beach behind the main strip and is noticeably cheaper for both accommodation and food. The baht buses (songthaews that run fixed routes for 10 baht) connect Central Pattaya to Jomtien, Pratumnak, and the bus terminal, making the whole resort accessible without a private vehicle.
Walking Street at the southern end is Pattaya's most famous strip — 500 metres of pedestrian-only street lined with clubs, live music venues, and beer bars that operate until dawn. It is genuinely entertaining as a spectacle and has undergone some gentrification with the addition of craft beer bars and late-night restaurants. Pattaya Beach itself is best enjoyed at the northern end near the Dolphin Roundabout where it is cleaner; the central section is functional rather than beautiful.
