Pai sits in a valley in Mae Hong Son province, 135 km northwest of Chiang Mai via the famous Mae Hong Son Loop — a road with 762 curves that is itself a significant attraction for motorcyclists. The town's appeal is its relaxed, slightly hippie atmosphere: wooden guesthouses surrounded by rice paddies, reggae bars, farm-to-table cafés, and an unusually high concentration of art studios and yoga centres for a town of 3,000 people. The natural attractions within easy reach are excellent: Mor Paeng Waterfall (8 km, free, popular for swimming), Pam Bok Waterfall (smaller, less visited), Tha Pai Hot Springs (8 km east, ฿200 entry), and the Chinese Village of Ban Santichon on a hilltop — a Kuomintang settlement with tea houses and panoramic valley views. Pai Canyon (Kong Lan) offers a dramatic sunset viewpoint over eroded red-earth ridges, best visited 30–45 minutes before sunset. The three-day Pai Music Festival held each December draws musicians from across Thailand. Getting to Pai means either a 3-hour minivan ride from Chiang Mai (฿150) navigating those hairpin bends, or a domestic flight with Kan Air (฿1,500–3,000).
