Chiang Mai is one of Southeast Asia's most exciting mountain biking destinations — a combination of varied terrain (from jungle singletrack to open ridgelines), Thailand's highest mountain (Doi Inthanon, 2,565m) within day-trip range, and a growing network of marked and maintained trails make it a genuinely world-class destination. The main riding areas: Doi Suthep-Pui National Park (immediately west of the city) has a network of mixed trails ranging from easy forest doubletrack to steep technical singletrack through the forest above the temple. Doi Inthanon (90 minutes south) is a full-day epic — the climb is grinding but the descent on the network of trails below the summit through misty forest is outstanding. Huay Tung Tao reservoir loop (north of the city) is an excellent half-day social ride with views and a good end-of-ride restaurant. The Mae Rim and Samoeng valleys (north of the city) have hill tribe villages, sweeping valley views, and fast dirt roads for less technical cross-country riding. Tour operators: X-Biking Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai Mountain Biking operate guided tours ranging from half-day beginner rides to multi-day adventures from ฿1,200 (half day) to ฿4,000+ (full day technical). They provide bikes, helmets, and support vehicles. Rental shops: decent quality full-suspension MTBs rent for ฿600–1,200/day; hardtails ฿300–600/day. Riding season: November–April is ideal (dry, cooler); rainy season trails get very muddy but some riders enjoy the mud riding.
