Every Sunday from 4pm, Wualai Road in Chiang Mai's old city transforms into Thailand's finest walking street market. Unlike the touristy Night Bazaar, the Sunday Walking Street is dominated by local artisans selling handmade goods — silverwork (Wualai Road has been Chiang Mai's silversmithing district for centuries), hand-woven fabrics, wood carvings, and locally produced oils, soaps, and ceramics. The food section is equally impressive: khao soi, sai oua (northern Thai sausage), nam prik noom (green chilli dip), kanom krok (coconut pancakes), and mango sticky rice are all staples. Musicians play traditional northern Thai instruments at intervals along the route, and Buddhist monks from nearby Wat Sri Suphan (the Silver Temple) observe the activity from the temple gates. The market runs approximately 1.5 km along Wualai Road from the Chiang Mai Gate intersection to near Wualai Silver complex. Arrive by 5pm to avoid peak crowds, and budget 2–3 hours to explore thoroughly. The Saturday Walking Street operates similarly on Wua Lai's sister road, Thanon Wichayanon (Tha Phae Walking Street), but Sunday's is generally considered the better of the two.
