The Golden Triangle refers to the point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak rivers in Chiang Rai province. Once the world's largest opium-producing region, it is now a major tourist stop with an excellent opium museum, river boat trips, and the option to cross into Laos. The Hall of Opium (Anantara Golden Triangle resort area, ฿300 entry) is a genuinely outstanding museum — thoughtfully designed, with eight galleries tracing the 5,000-year history of opium from ancient Mesopotamia through the British opium wars to the region's own drug trade. It is one of Thailand's best museums. The Mekong River here is wide and atmospheric — long-tail boats take visitors to the confluence point and to the small Laos island of Don Sao (a brief visa-free shopping stop). The Anantara Golden Triangle elephant camp (now rebranded as ethical observation and mahout training) and the GMS Opium Watch museum provide additional context. The Golden Triangle is 60 km north of Chiang Rai (about 1 hour by car or minivan), making it an easy half-day add-on to any Chiang Rai visit. The town of Chiang Saen nearby has substantial Lanna-era ruins worth exploring.
