Bangkok is often thought of as an expensive city but the truth is the opposite — an enormous range of the city's best experiences cost nothing at all. Free experiences in Bangkok worth prioritising: (1) Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) — one of Bangkok's most beautiful temple complexes; the outer courtyard is free, the inner section with the reclining Buddha costs 200 THB but is worth it. (2) Chatuchak Weekend Market — the world's largest weekend market is free to enter; just don't expect to leave without spending anything. Open Saturdays and Sundays 9am–6pm. (3) Chao Phraya River promenade — walk the riverside along Charoen Nakhon or take the Chao Phraya Express boat (15 THB) to see the river temples for next to nothing. (4) Lumphini Park — 142 acres of green space in central Bangkok with a lake, monitor lizards, outdoor exercise, and a free Sunday outdoor concert series. (5) Chinatown (Yaowarat) evening walk — the neon-lit street food strip from 5pm is spectacular and you can walk the length of it without buying anything (though you won't want to). (6) Banglamphu neighbourhood — the old part of Bangkok around Khao San Road has genuine historic architecture, temples, and neighbourhood feel free to explore. (7) Flower Market (Pak Khlong Talat) — wholesale flower market near Memorial Bridge; stunning at night from midnight-5am, free to enter. (8) Bang Krachao (the Green Lung) — a loop of the Chao Phraya that remained green while Bangkok developed. Cycle hire is cheap (100 THB/day) and it's a free destination reached by a 4 THB ferry. (9) On Nut morning market — authentic local market completely untouched by tourism; free to browse. (10) Rooftop bars at sunset (Lebua State Tower lobby, Octave Rooftop Bar) — technically free to enter; order one drink for a world-class view. (11) Grand Palace exterior and surroundings — walking the perimeter of the palace grounds is free and gives an impressive view of the complex. (12) Museum on the Bang Rak waterfront — free on weekends. (13) CentralWorld mall food court and architecture — free to explore; food is cheap. Bangkok genuinely rewards slow wandering on foot and by river — the free experiences easily fill several days.
