Wat Pho — formally Wat Phra Chetuphon — is Bangkok's oldest and largest temple complex, predating the founding of the Rattanakosin kingdom. The site is dominated by the Reclining Buddha: a gilded figure 46 metres long and 15 metres high, its feet inlaid with 108 auspicious mother-of-pearl panels. The sheer scale inside the viharn is genuinely breathtaking.
Beyond the centrepiece, the grounds contain over 1,000 Buddha images, four towering chedis clad in Chinese porcelain tiles, and shaded cloister galleries. Wat Pho is also the historical headquarters of traditional Thai massage and still houses a renowned massage school and clinic on site — the treatment rooms in the northern compound offer authentic traditional massage at reasonable prices.
The temple sits directly behind the Grand Palace, making it easy to combine both in a single half-day visit. Early mornings before 9am are calm; by late morning tour groups arrive in force. Allow at least 90 minutes to explore thoroughly.

Buy a combined ticket at the Grand Palace if visiting both — it saves queuing twice.
The massage school inside the compound offers 30-minute traditional massages for around 260 THB — genuinely excellent.
Wear slip-on shoes; you remove them repeatedly at every hall entrance.
The best photo of the Reclining Buddha is from the feet end looking towards the head.
