Chatuchak Weekend Market (JJ Market) is one of the world's largest markets, with over 15,000 stalls spread across 35 acres in north Bangkok. It operates on Saturdays and Sundays (plus Friday evenings for wholesale), drawing an estimated 200,000 visitors per weekend. The sheer scale is disorienting on first visit — maze-like alleys are organised into loosely themed sections, though navigation remains a challenge.
The range of goods is extraordinary: vintage clothing, handmade ceramics, plants, antiques, Buddhist art, street food, live animals (a controversial section), fashion, handicrafts, furniture, books, and much more. Price negotiation is expected, especially for clothing and decorative items. The quality ranges from tourist trinket to genuinely exceptional handmade craft.
Chatuchak is best visited in the morning before it becomes uncomfortably hot. Sections 1–27 on the western side tend toward clothing and accessories; sections 26–27 are antiques and art; the eastern sections are plants, pets, and household goods. The food section (around the clock tower and section 26–27) is among the best cheap eating in Bangkok.

Visitor Tips
Download the Chatuchak map app or use Google Maps satellite view to orient yourself before you arrive.
Bring cash — most stalls do not accept cards, and ATMs have queues.
Wear light clothing and bring water; the covered sections trap heat significantly.
Bargaining is normal, expected, and good-natured. Start at 60–70% of the asking price.
The Nancy Chandler Map of Chatuchak is a Bangkok institution and available at the market for comprehensive shopping guidance.
