Thailand has approximately 40,000 Buddhist temples (wats), and the vast majority charge nothing to enter. The famous tourist temples with entry fees — Wat Phra Kaew (500 THB), Wat Pho (200 THB), Wat Arun (100 THB) — are absolutely worth visiting on a first trip but represent a tiny fraction of Thailand's Buddhist architecture. Here are the finest free temples by destination: Bangkok: Wat Suthat Thepwararam — one of Bangkok's largest and most beautiful temples in the oldest district; free entry; home to the Giant Swing (Sao Ching Cha) across the road. Wat Ratchabophit — stunning blend of Thai and Victorian architecture, near the City Hall; always quiet and free. Wat Ratchanaddaram (Loha Prasat) — the metal castle temple off Ratchadamnoen Avenue; the loha prasat spire is unique in Thailand; free outer complex. Wat Saket — the Golden Mount has a 20 THB climbing fee but the temple grounds are free. Chiang Mai: Wat Chedi Luang — the magnificent ruined chedi in the Old City is free; a monk chat program operates inside where visitors can speak with novice monks. Wat Phra Singh — Chiang Mai's most revered temple; technically entry donations are requested but the gate is not ticketed. Wat Suan Dok — working university temple with a monthly lantern release; always free. Wat Umong — remarkable forest temple south of the city with ancient tunnels under a wooded hill; free. Sukhothai & Ayutthaya historical parks: the parks collectively charge 220 THB for full site access but individual outer temples not within the park boundaries are free. Chiang Rai: Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) — one of Thailand's most photographed contemporary temples; free. White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) — charges 100 THB but is spectacular. Temple etiquette reminder for free temples: always remove shoes, cover shoulders and knees, speak quietly, never climb on Buddha images or temple structures, and never point feet toward Buddha images. Small donation boxes are present at all temples — a modest contribution (20–50 THB) is always appreciated at free sites.
