You usually do not choose — your airline decides. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles most full-service international flights and Thai Airways. Don Mueang (DMK) is the budget airline hub for AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air domestic and regional routes. If you have a layover in Bangkok involving one flight from each, allow 3+ hours and note they are separate airports requiring a transfer.
Airlines and Routes
Suvarnabhumi (BKK)is Thailand's flagship international gateway, opened in 2006. It handles the vast majority of long-haul intercontinental flights and is the base for Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. Major carriers including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and Lufthansa all operate from Suvarnabhumi. It is the airport you will use if flying from Europe, North America, or on most long-haul routes from Asia.
Don Mueang (DMK)is Bangkok's original airport, reopened as a budget hub in 2012. It serves AirAsia (the largest operator), Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, Thai VietJet, and some Scoot routes. Domestic flights within Thailand are split between both airports — check carefully when booking. Don Mueang also serves some regional international routes to cities in China, India, and Southeast Asia on budget carriers.
A third airport, Don Mueang's eventual replacement Suvarnabhumi Terminal 2, opened for domestic traffic in 2023 — adding further capacity to the BKK side.
Getting to the City
From Suvarnabhumi: The Airport Rail Link (ARL) runs every 10–15 minutes from 6am to midnight. The express service reaches Makkasan/Phaya Thai in 30 minutes for 150 THB. A metered taxi to central Bangkok costs around 300–400 THB plus 50 THB expressway toll and 50 THB airport surcharge. Grab is available and avoids negotiation. Public buses exist but are slow and confusing for first-timers.
From Don Mueang: There is no dedicated rail link from Don Mueang to the city yet (the Red Line commuter train runs from Don Mueang station nearby but connectivity to the BTS/MRT network requires transfers). A metered taxi to central Bangkok costs around 250–350 THB plus tolls. Grab is available. Public bus route A1 runs to Mo Chit BTS station for 30 THB but is slow. For budget travellers, a taxi via Grab is usually the best balance of price and ease.
The two airports are connected by a free shuttle bus (for connecting passengers on eligible itineraries) and by Grab/taxi (around 300–400 THB, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Never assume the journey between airports is quick — allow a minimum of 2 hours, ideally 3.

Suvarnabhumi is a large, modern terminal with extensive shopping, food options across all price ranges, priority lounges (including the excellent THAI Royal Orchid lounge for premium passengers), and a transit hotel. Immigration queues can be long during peak arrivals. The airport is well signposted in English.
Don Mueang has two terminals — Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic. Facilities are more basic, befitting its budget airline focus, though a refurbishment in recent years has improved the international terminal. There is a food court, a few convenience stores, and basic lounge access for eligible passengers. Queues at budget carrier check-in desks can be very long — arrive early.
