About Long Beach (Phra Ae)

Long Beach, officially named Hat Phra Ae, is Koh Lanta's most popular beach — a 3 km stretch of fine golden sand on the island's north-west coast that consistently offers the best combination of beach quality, accommodation variety, and social atmosphere available anywhere on the island. It sits between the more crowded Klong Dao to the north and the quieter southern beaches, and represents Koh Lanta at its most well-balanced: enough services and social activity to make it practical and enjoyable, not so developed that it loses the relaxed island character that makes Koh Lanta worth choosing over Krabi or Phuket.

The beach itself is genuinely beautiful: the sand is finer and more golden than Krabi's Ao Nang, the water is clear and swimmable through the high season (November to April), and the palm trees behind give it a classic tropical beach look. Sunset from Long Beach is outstanding — you face west over the Andaman and the sun drops behind a small cluster of offshore islands. Multiple beach bars and restaurants set up chairs and low tables on the sand every evening for sunset hour.

Behind the beach, the main road has developed organically rather than by plan: guesthouses and bungalows in the jungle behind, restaurants ranging from Thai local food to European-owned beach cafes, minimarkets, yoga studios, and dive shops. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and non-commercial — Koh Lanta attracts people who have been to Koh Samui and Phuket and want something with less noise, lower prices, and a more genuine beach feel.
