Thailand for First-Timers: Essential 10-Day Route

If it's your first time in Thailand, this itinerary removes all guesswork — well-connected destinations, reliable transport, English-friendly hotels, and the bucket-list sights that live up to the hype. You'll leave having seen the Grand Palace, ridden an elephant ethically, and swum in the Andaman Sea.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Welcome to Bangkok

    Bangkok
    relaxed pace

The orientation walk is the one deliberate addition here compared to a plain arrival day — a short loop near the hotel to find the nearest BTS station and a few food stalls, so tomorrow's Royal Sites day starts from familiarity rather than a map. Being based near the BTS matters more on this trip than on most, since it's how you'll move for the next three days.

    • Arrive Suvarnabhumi, hotel check-in
    • Orientation walk, street food introduction
Sukhumvit mid-range hotel (easy BTS access)$35·$90·$220
  2. 2

    Bangkok's Royal Sites

    Bangkok
    packed pace

The Wat Pho stop here is doing double duty as both a temple visit and the site of Thailand's most famous traditional massage school, which is easy to miss if you only came for the reclining Buddha. Pair the Grand Palace's formality with Wat Pho's more relaxed grounds, then let the river crossing to Wat Arun be the day's wind-down rather than another checklist stop.

Watch out: It's easy to see the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and walk straight back out without realising the massage school is on the same grounds.

    • Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha
    • Wat Pho massage + reclining Buddha
    • Wat Arun river crossing
    Same Bangkok hotel$40·$95·$230
  3. 3

    Bangkok Markets & MBK

    Bangkok
    moderate pace

This day is built with a fallback already in it — Chatuchak if the dates line up, MBK if they don't — which makes it more forgiving than the market days on other itineraries. Lumphini Park in the middle of the afternoon is a genuine change of pace between two shopping-heavy stops.

    • Chatuchak Weekend Market (Sat/Sun) or MBK Mall
    • Lumphini Park picnic
    • Silom street food evening
    Same Bangkok hotel$40·$90·$220

Train to Ayutthaya & Fly to Chiang Mai

    Chiang Mai
    packed pace

The Ayutthaya add-on is explicitly optional here, and for good reason — fitting a side trip to the old capital and a train back to Bangkok ahead of an afternoon flight is the tightest connection in the whole itinerary. Skip it and this becomes a calm travel day; keep it and there's real risk of arriving at Chiang Mai's Night Bazaar too tired to enjoy it.

Watch out: The Ayutthaya morning only works if the train back to Bangkok comfortably clears your flight time — treat it as optional rather than a given.

    • Morning train to Ayutthaya ancient capital (optional)
    • Afternoon flight to Chiang Mai
    • Night Bazaar
Train BKK–AYA then fly CNXOld City guesthouse$60·$120·$270

    Chiang Mai Temples

    Chiang Mai
    packed pace

Two temples inside the Old City walls after Doi Suthep is more walking than it looks on paper, since Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh sit at opposite ends of the old moat. The cooking class in the evening is seated and unhurried, which makes a good contrast to a morning spent on your feet.

    • Doi Suthep morning
    • Old City Wat Chedi Luang & Wat Phra Singh
    • Evening cooking class
    Old City guesthouse$45·$100·$220
  6. 6

    Elephant Sanctuary

    Chiang Mai
    moderate pace

Choosing full-day over half-day here changes the whole shape of the trip's midpoint — full-day means arriving back in the Old City with little left for anything but the massage that closes the evening, while half-day leaves a genuine free afternoon. Either way, the massage is the right way to end it rather than another activity.

    • Full or half-day ethical elephant sanctuary
    • Return to Old City
    • Thai massage evening
    Old City guesthouse$70·$140·$290
  7. 7

    Fly to Phuket

    Phuket
    relaxed pace

After the elephant sanctuary and the temple-heavy days before it, this is the trip's clear exhale — a flight south, then nothing more demanding than getting into the water at Kata or Karon before the day's title sunset. There's no second activity stacked on top of the beach here, which is deliberate.

    • Morning flight south
    • Kata or Karon Beach afternoon
    • First Thai beach sunset
    Flight CNX–HKTKata Beach resort$60·$130·$310
  8. 8

    Phi Phi Day Trip

    Phuket
    packed pace

A full day on a speedboat with Maya Bay as the centrepiece means an early start from Kata and a late return, so treat yesterday's easy beach afternoon as the deliberate rest before this one. Dinner back on Phuket is the reward for a long day rather than a leisurely evening out.

    • Speedboat Phi Phi Don & Leh
    • Maya Bay snorkeling
    • Return Phuket sunset dinner
    Kata Beach resort$50·$110·$260
  9. 9

    Phang Nga Bay

    Phuket
    moderate pace

The kayaking through the sea caves is the physically active part of the day, and it's worth pacing yourself for it rather than treating the whole day as another sit-in-a-boat tour like yesterday's. James Bond Island itself is a short stop compared with the caves and mangroves around it.

    • James Bond Island boat tour
    • Sea caves and mangrove kayaking
    • Seafood dinner
    Kata Beach resort$45·$110·$270
  10. 10

    Depart

    Phuket
    relaxed pace

The last morning is short and unstructured on purpose after two consecutive tour days — a final swim if there's time, then the transfer to HKT closes out ten days that rarely let up.

    • Final beach morning
    • Transfer HKT airport, depart
    N/A$20·$50·$120
