Bangkok, Pattaya & Hua Hin: 7-Day Gulf Coast Road Trip

This coastal road trip stays on Thailand's eastern and western Gulf shores — Bangkok to Pattaya for resort beaches and night life, then up the western coast to Hua Hin for a gentler, royal-favourite beach town. Easy transport links keep the journey stress-free.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Bangkok — Quick Start

    Bangkok
    packed pace

The Grand Palace and Wat Pho are compressed into a single morning here, which is tighter than a dedicated culture trip would allow — the palace complex alone can absorb hours, and the afternoon transfer east doesn't wait for stragglers. Treat the temples as a taster rather than the thorough visit they'd get on a longer stay.

Watch out: Fitting the Grand Palace and Wat Pho into a single morning before an afternoon departure is tighter than the day's title, 'Quick Start', suggests — the palace complex alone can eat the whole window.

    • Grand Palace and Wat Pho in the morning
    • Afternoon transfer east toward Pattaya
    Bangkok hotel near transit points$40·$100·$260

Pattaya — Beach Resort & Sanctuary of Truth

    Pattaya
    moderate pace

The Sanctuary of Truth is an active restoration project as much as a finished temple — carving work continues across the structure, and scaffolded or closed sections are part of the ordinary visit rather than a flaw in the day's planning. Beach time and water sports afterwards are a straightforward contrast, with no logistics involved.

Watch out: The Sanctuary of Truth is under continuous restoration, so parts of the structure may be scaffolded or closed off on any given visit — it doesn't mean anything has gone wrong.

    • Sanctuary of Truth carved wooden temple
    • Pattaya beach and water sports
Bus from Bangkok Eastern Bus Terminal (2 hr, 120 THB)Resort hotel on Pattaya Beach or Jomtien$45·$120·$320
  3. 3

    Pattaya Islands Day Trip

    Pattaya
    moderate pace

A speedboat out to Koh Larn is quick, but the island draws heavy day-tripper numbers from Pattaya, and the piers and beaches reflect that — this isn't the quiet island snorkel it might sound like. Jomtien in the evening is a genuinely different beach from either the morning's island or Pattaya's main strip, worth the short move for a calmer sunset.

Watch out: Koh Larn's proximity to Pattaya makes it one of the busiest day-trip islands in the country — expect crowded piers and beaches rather than a quiet stop.

    • Koh Larn island snorkel and beach trip by speedboat
    • Sunset on Jomtien Beach

    Pattaya to Hua Hin

    Hua Hin
    packed pace

Despite the 'scenic Gulf crossing' framing, the road route between Pattaya and Hua Hin actually runs inland via Bangkok, since the two towns sit on opposite sides of the Gulf with no direct coastal road between them — the genuine sea crossing is a separate seasonal ferry option. Either way, most of the day is spent in transit before the Night Market seafood dinner marks the arrival.

Watch out: The road transfer between Pattaya and Hua Hin loops inland through Bangkok rather than following the coast — the actual Gulf crossing is the seasonal ferry, a different option entirely from the bus or minivan route.

    • Transit day — scenic Gulf crossing
    • Hua Hin arrival and Night Market seafood dinner
Bus or minivan via Bangkok (3–4 hr)Boutique hotel near Hua Hin beach$45·$110·$280
  5. 5

    Hua Hin Beach & Town

    Hua Hin
    relaxed pace

A morning swim and a horse ride along the beach set an unhurried tone that the evening at Cicada Night Market continues — nothing about this day depends on the previous day's transfer going smoothly, which after the transit of day four is a relief.

    • Hua Hin beach morning swim and horse ride
    • Cicada Night Market in the evening
    Same Hua Hin hotel$40·$100·$260

Khao Sam Roi Yot Day Trip

    Hua Hin
    packed pace

Phraya Nakhon Cave's famous shaft of light through the roof is only dramatic for a window around the middle of the day, so a loosely timed visit can easily miss the effect the cave is known for. Kayaking through the mangrove channels afterwards is a completely different kind of activity, on the water rather than underground, and works well as a change of pace once the cave visit is done.

Watch out: The cave's well-known beam of light only falls properly for a window around midday — arriving too early or too late means missing the one thing the site is famous for.

    • Phraya Nakhon Cave — sunlit cave with a royal pavilion
    • Kayaking in the mangrove channels
    Same Hua Hin hotel$55·$140·$380

    Return to Bangkok & Depart

    Bangkok
    packed pace

The transfer back to Bangkok is the whole day, and it needs to be treated that way — with an international departure from either Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang immediately afterwards, there's little margin if the train or bus back runs long. Know which airport before leaving Hua Hin, since the two sit on different sides of the city.

Watch out: A same-day transfer back into Bangkok followed immediately by an international departure leaves little buffer if the journey overruns — confirm which airport in advance, since Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are on opposite sides of the city.

    • Train or bus back to Bangkok (3.5 hr)
    • Depart from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang
    Train or bus Hua Hin–BangkokN/A$35·$90·$220
