Is Koh Lanta Good for Families?

Koh Lanta is consistently recommended as one of Thailand's best family islands — but the detail matters. Here's an honest assessment.

Quick Answer

Is Koh Lanta good for families?

Yes — Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's best family island destinations. It has calm northern beaches, a relaxed (not party) atmosphere, no crowds relative to Phuket or Koh Samui, good family accommodation, and excellent day trip options. The main limitations are the limited medical facilities and the seasonal sea conditions on the Andaman coast (rough May-October).

Why Families Choose Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta occupies a sweet spot that few Thai islands match: enough infrastructure for comfortable family travel (good restaurants, reliable accommodation, ATMs, pharmacies) without the mass-tourism development that makes Phuket's Patong or Koh Samui's Chaweng feel overwhelming with children. The island is long and relatively thin, with the main beaches on the west coast and a national park covering the southern third.

The atmosphere is fundamentally quiet. The island has virtually no nightclub scene and the backpacker-party crowd largely heads to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. What you get instead is an island where families, couples, and divers dominate — and where the pace is gentle enough that children can roam more freely than in a hectic resort town.

Beaches and Swimming

Long Beach (Hat Khlong Dao) at the north end is the main family beach — long, sandy, with a gently sloping seabed that makes it safe for younger children during the dry season. The water is warm and relatively clear. It's backed by the island's largest concentration of restaurants, shops, and mid-range resorts.

Further south, Klong Nin and Klong Jak beaches are quieter with fewer facilities but beautiful settings. These suit families wanting more seclusion who are prepared to drive or rent a scooter to reach restaurants. The southern tip beaches have stronger currents and are better for adults.

Monsoon Season Warning

Koh Lanta is on the Andaman coast, which means the southwest monsoon (May–October) brings rough seas and heavy rain. Some resorts close entirely. If travelling with young children during this period, prioritise the Gulf coast islands instead (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Hua Hin).

Practical Family Logistics

Getting to Koh Lanta: from Krabi Airport (1.5 hours) or Krabi Town by minivan and ferry combination — approximately 350 THB per adult. From Phuket: minivan plus ferry is available but takes 3+ hours. The ferry crossing is brief (10–15 minutes for most routes) and not an issue for children.

Medical: Koh Lanta has a small government hospital and private clinics capable of handling minor issues. Serious medical care requires transfer to Krabi Town hospital (1.5 hours by road) or Phuket International Hospital (3 hours). Travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential. Stock a basic medical kit for your accommodation.
