Choosing the right beach resort for a family holiday in Thailand requires thinking beyond the brochure. The two critical factors most families overlook: the actual beach conditions (wave height, current strength, and jellyfish risk vary enormously between beaches and seasons) and whether the resort is in a genuinely family-oriented area or surrounded by adult nightlife. Best overall family beach destinations: Hua Hin — accessible from Bangkok (3.5 hours), calm Gulf beach, wide promenade, zero party-resort atmosphere, extensive family accommodation. Best for Bangkok families on shorter trips. Koh Lanta (Krabi province) — Andaman coast but sheltered bay configuration at Long Beach gives calm swimming. Significantly less developed and quieter than Phuket. National park access. Strong for families 2–12. Koh Samui (Maenam and Bo Phut beaches) — north coast beaches are calm and the resort density means excellent facilities. Avoid Chaweng Beach (busy, noisier). Strong family infrastructure island-wide. Ao Nang (Krabi mainland) — good base for day trips to beaches and islands; calm main beach, wide promenade, family restaurants. Phuket Mai Khao Beach — far north of Phuket, extremely quiet, calm sea, turtle nesting beach. Mostly luxury resorts but family-oriented. Specific resort recommendations per location: Hua Hin: Marriott Resort & Spa, InterContinental, Centara Grand (with waterslide park). Koh Lanta: Costa Lanta (stylish, family-friendly), Crown Lanta Resort. Koh Samui: Anantara Bophut, Melati Beach Resort & Spa. Ao Nang: Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi (own private island). Phuket: Marriott Mai Khao, SALA Phuket. Seasonal note: avoid the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) May–October if calm seas are critical — the southwest monsoon produces rough conditions. The Gulf coast (Samui, Hua Hin, Koh Tao) has better conditions year-round with the peak Gulf rough season in November–January.
