Quick Answer

Hua Hin vs Pattaya

Both sit within 2–3 hours of Bangkok, but they attract very different crowds. Hua Hin is Thailand's original beach resort — relaxed, genteel, and home to the Thai royal family's summer palace. The beaches are decent, the seafood is excellent, and the expat community skews older and more lifestyle-focused. Pattaya is louder, cheaper, and famous for its nightlife on Walking Street. Its beaches are less attractive than Hua Hin's, but the water-sport infrastructure, abundance of budget accommodation, and sheer variety of entertainment keep it Southeast Asia's busiest beach resort by visitor numbers. Choose Hua Hin for peace and genuine Thai character; choose Pattaya for maximum entertainment and value.

Detailed Comparison

Beach & Natural Setting

Hua Hin wins

Hua Hin

Hua Hin's main beach stretches nearly 5 km along a gentle bay. The sand is pale and firm, the water is cleaner than Pattaya's Gulf coast, and the backdrop of fishing boats, the old railway station, and Khao Hin Lek Fai hill give it a distinctly Thai character. Khao Takiab beach to the south is quieter and backed by a monkey-inhabited headland. The overall setting is calm and photogenic, particularly at sunrise.

Pattaya

Pattaya Beach itself is wide but suffers from boat traffic and murky water — few people swim there by choice. The real beach salvation is Jomtien, 5 km south, which is longer, cleaner, and backed by a mix of resorts and local eateries. Koh Larn island (45 minutes by boat) has genuinely beautiful beaches — Tawaen and Samae — that make for excellent day trips. Pattaya's strength is access rather than beauty.

Food & Dining

Tie

Hua Hin

Hua Hin is famous throughout Thailand for its seafood. The Hua Hin Night Market and seafood restaurants along the waterfront are institutions — crab, lobster, and giant prawns grilled fresh at tables overlooking the sea. The town also has excellent Thai street food and a growing selection of international restaurants serving the expat community. Prices are moderate rather than budget.

Pattaya

Pattaya has arguably Thailand's widest choice of international food outside Bangkok — large expat communities from Russia, Germany, Scandinavia, and the UK have produced an enormous range of non-Thai restaurants. Thai street food is cheap and plentiful along Second Road and Jomtien Beach Road. The beach-facing seafood restaurants are reasonable but inferior to Hua Hin's fresher produce. Overall, Pattaya wins on variety; Hua Hin wins on quality.

Day Trips & Activities

Tie

Hua Hin

Hua Hin punches above its weight for day trips. Sam Roi Yot National Park (90 minutes) has dramatic limestone cave temples and birdwatching. Pranburi Forest Park and Khao Sam Roi Yot's beaches are quiet and beautiful. The Hua Hin vineyards (Monsoon Valley) are unique in Thailand. Local golf is exceptional — six championship courses within 30 minutes — explaining why the town attracts so many golfing retirees.

Pattaya

Pattaya's day trips centre on water: speedboat trips to Koh Larn, snorkelling tours, deep-sea fishing, and wakeboarding at cable parks. Nong Nooch tropical garden is one of Thailand's best botanical gardens. The Sanctuary of Truth — an extraordinary carved wooden temple — is genuinely unmissable. Mini Siam and Pattaya Floating Market offer easier cultural options. The Khao Yai National Park is a 2.5-hour drive for those wanting nature.

Our Verdict

Hua Hin is the clear winner for families, retirees, and those wanting authentic Thai character. Pattaya wins on nightlife, budget accommodation, and water sports variety.
