Quick Answer
Best Beaches in Thailand
Thailand's finest beaches are on the Andaman coast (west side) where the turquoise water and limestone scenery are exceptional. Railay Beach in Krabi — accessible only by longboat since cliffs cut it off from the mainland — is among Southeast Asia's most dramatic settings. Kata Noi in Phuket is small, clean, and consistently beautiful. The Gulf of Thailand's best beaches include Chaweng (Samui) and Koh Tao's Haad Rin area. For pure seclusion, Koh Lipe and Koh Kradan in the far south are outstanding.

Detailed Comparison
Andaman Sea — The Most Beautiful Beaches
Railay Beach winsRailay Beach
The Andaman's beaches benefit from limestone geology that creates dramatic backdrops unlike the Gulf. Railay Beach (Krabi) has four beaches within a short walk — Railay West for swimming, Railay East for mangroves, Phra Nang for a sea cave and divine sunset, and Tonsai for rock climbers. No roads access Railay; longtails run from Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was rehabilitated and re-opened to snorkelling tours in 2022 after vegetation recovery. Koh Lipe's Sunrise Beach has sand so fine it squeaks.
Kata Noi (Phuket)
Koh Kradan and Koh Muk in Trang province are among the most pristine beaches in Thailand and remain significantly less visited than Phuket or Krabi equivalents. The shallow reef at Koh Kradan can be snorkelled directly from the beach. Koh Ngai (also Trang) has a long curved beach with a resort feel but minimal development.
Gulf of Thailand Beaches
TieRailay Beach
Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach is 6 km of white sand with the island's best facilities: beach clubs, restaurants, and easy transport. It is busy but well-maintained. Lamai Beach on the same island is slightly quieter with a more local character. Koh Phangan's Haad Rin hosts the Full Moon Party; the north coast (Haad Salad, Haad Yao) is quiet and beautiful.
Kata Noi (Phuket)
Koh Tao's beaches are smaller but the water quality is exceptional. Haad Sai Nuan on the south coast and Sai Thong on the west are quiet and picturesque. Japanese Garden near Koh Nang Yuan (accessible by short kayak or snorkel) is outstanding. Koh Nang Yuan itself — three tiny islands connected by sand bars — is one of the most photographed spots in the Gulf.
Phuket's Beach Spectrum
TieRailay Beach
Phuket has over 30 named beaches ranging from Patong (1.5 km of high-energy resort beach) to Kata Noi (300m of quiet, clear perfection). Surin and Kamala attract an upscale crowd with beach clubs and good restaurants. Nai Harn in the south is a local favourite with a lake behind the beach. Nai Yang near the airport is calm, clean, and popular with kitesurfers.
Kata Noi (Phuket)
Less-visited Phuket beaches include Ao Sane (small, rocky, but excellent snorkelling near Nai Harn), Laem Singh (accessible only by sea or steep path, closed to development since 2016, currently in a legal grey zone), and Ya Nui (small beach between Nai Harn and Promthep Cape with a single restaurant and excellent sunsets). Worth the effort for those who want to escape the crowds.
Our Verdict
Thailand's beaches range from iconic to overrated. Railay, Koh Lipe, and Kata Noi consistently rank as the most beautiful; Chaweng and Patong offer the most facilities.
