Buddhism is woven into every aspect of Thai life, and the temple (wat) is the physical and spiritual centre of Thai communities. Beyond their religious function, Thailand's temples are among the most remarkable architectural achievements in Asia — gold leaf spires catching the morning light, ordination halls decorated with intricate murals depicting the Jataka tales, and gardens kept to a standard that most public parks could not match. The ten temples on this list include the unmissable classics and several that reward effort to reach them.
Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) within the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok is mandatory — the revered Emerald Buddha image (actually made of jade) is changed into three different seasonal costumes by the King himself. Wat Pho, next door, has the 46-metre Reclining Buddha and is the original site of Thailand's traditional massage training school. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) across the Chao Phraya is even more beautiful at dusk than its name suggests. In Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep on the mountain above the city is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples with a sweeping view of the city and plains below. Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) in Chiang Rai, designed by contemporary artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, is a strikingly different take on temple architecture — all white and mirror mosaic. Ayutthaya's ruined temple complex (particularly Wat Mahathat with the famous Buddha head in tree roots) represents the golden age of Siamese civilisation. Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has the most atmospheric of Thailand's ancient temples set in a landscaped park with lotus-filled ponds. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai's old city, and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) in Chiang Rai round out an extraordinary collection. Dress modestly at all temples — shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed.
