Thailand's landscape is extraordinarily varied — from the flat central plains and forested northern mountains to the dramatic karst limestone of the south and the island coastlines of the Gulf and Andaman. This variety produces some of Asia's most spectacular viewpoints. At its best — watching the sunrise over Doi Inthanon's sea of clouds, or watching the sun set behind Koh Phi Phi's limestone towers from the viewpoint ridge — Thailand's scenic moments are genuinely world-class.
In northern Thailand, Doi Inthanon National Park (the country's highest peak at 2,565m) and the adjacent Doi Pha Hom Pok offer spectacular sunrise views above the cloud line from late October to February. Doi Suthep above Chiang Mai has a celebrated viewpoint at the temple terrace looking down over the entire Chiang Mai plain — best at dusk. In Bangkok, the rooftop bars of Lebua State Tower (the Sky Bar, famous from the Hangover Part II) and the Vertigo Bar at the Banyan Tree Hotel offer spectacular city panoramas. In the south, the Koh Phi Phi viewpoint — reached by a steep 20-minute climb from Tonsai village — is one of Thailand's most photographed vistas, looking down over the double bays of Phi Phi Don with Phi Phi Leh beyond. Koh Lanta's lighthouse on the southern cape has a beautiful sunset view. Phangnga Bay's James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) and the surrounding karst formations are best appreciated by kayak among the limestone towers at water level. On Koh Samui, the Big Buddha viewpoint and the hilltop roads of the interior give sweeping views over the island and gulf. Sunrise at Phu Chi Fa mountain in Chiang Rai province, overlooking a sea of clouds with Laos visible beyond, is one of Thailand's truly great viewpoint experiences — cold, dramatic, and worth the 3am alarm.
