Best Time to Visit Phuket
Phuket has two distinct seasons and visits in either can be excellent — if you know what to expect. Here is a month-by-month breakdown to plan your trip.
Quick Answer
When is the best time to visit Phuket?
November to April is the dry season with calm seas, blue skies, and the best conditions for beaches and water activities. December to February is peak season (most expensive). For value, November or March–April offer excellent weather with lower prices than Christmas/New Year. Budget travellers and those who don't mind occasional rain will find May–October significantly cheaper with a different, greener beauty.
Dry Season: November to April
November: Excellent — the season opener, good weather, prices still moderate before the Christmas rush. Seas calm out after October swells.
December–January: Peak season, most expensive, best weather, most crowded. Patong and popular beaches are very busy. Book accommodation months ahead for this period.
February: Still dry, slightly less expensive than January. Excellent sea conditions. Good month for island hopping and snorkelling.
March–April: Hot and dry. Prices drop from peak levels. Excellent beaches. Songkran festival in April adds cultural experience.
Wet Season: May to October
May–June: Transition months — rain picking up, seas getting rougher, prices dropping sharply. Some boat trips cancelled. Good for budget travellers who want the island without the crowds.
July–August: Peak wet season — regular rain, rough Andaman seas, red flags on west-coast beaches. However, this is also European summer holiday season, so Phuket is busier than other wet-season months. East coast of Thailand (Koh Samui) is drier during these months.
September–October:Heaviest rains, quietest period, cheapest accommodation. Seas can be very rough. Best avoided if sea activities are your priority. Phuket Town's cultural attractions and food scene remain excellent.
Avoiding Crowds
West vs East Coast Phuket
Most of Phuket's famous beaches are on the west coast (Patong, Karon, Kata, Surin, Bang Tao) — these face the Andaman Sea and bear the brunt of wet-season swells. The east coast (Chalong Bay area) is calmer in monsoon season and is the departure point for most island boat trips. Phuket Town's historic quarter is excellent year-round regardless of weather.
