Thailand has over 1,400 islands, but most visitors choose from a much smaller set of well-known options. Each has a distinct character, cost profile, and optimal visitor type. The most common mistake is choosing based on name recognition alone — Phuket, for instance, is excellent for some travellers and actively wrong for others. Understanding the differences before booking saves significant disappointment.
Koh Samui is the most developed of Thailand's major islands — a comprehensive resort destination with international hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, and good flight connections. The beaches on the northeast (Chaweng, Lamai) are busy and commercialised; the quieter west and south coasts are more appealing. It suits travellers who want island vibes with city-level convenience and are willing to pay for it. Koh Phangan, 20km north by ferry, built its identity on the monthly Full Moon Party but has diversified substantially — the north and east coasts have beautiful quiet beaches and a substantial wellness/yoga community. Koh Tao, another 40km north, is the diving island — tiny, with limited beach space but excellent water and a thriving backpacker scene. Koh Lanta in the Andaman sits at the opposite end of the atmosphere spectrum: long quiet beaches on the west coast, excellent food, and a relaxed pace that attracts longer-stay visitors and families. Koh Chang in the eastern Gulf is Thailand's third-largest island — rugged jungle interior, good trekking, and beaches that are genuinely excellent despite being less known. Phuket is not really an island getaway — it is a large city connected to the mainland by bridge, with resort areas along its west coast. It offers the best infrastructure, international dining, and water activities, but lacks the escape feeling of smaller islands.
