Island travel in Thailand has a wide price range. Koh Tao and Koh Phangan remain genuinely budget-friendly — dormitory beds start at 200–300 THB, local food is cheap, and transport between the islands is affordable. Koh Samui at the other end is a full resort island where mid-range accommodation starts at 1,500–2,000 THB per night. Phuket is even more expensive. Understanding which islands offer genuine value versus inflated tourist prices makes a significant difference on a tight budget.
Koh Tao is Thailand's best-value island for combining affordability with beauty — the diving infrastructure keeps prices competitive, guesthouses are plentiful, and local restaurant food is 80–120 THB per meal. The catch is the beach quality (modest) and the party vibe (significant). Koh Phangan away from Haad Rin is excellent value — the north and east coasts have beautiful beaches, good guesthouses for 400–800 THB per night, and good local food. Koh Chang in the eastern Gulf offers large-island infrastructure (including some supermarkets) at substantially lower prices than the Gulf's western equivalents. Koh Lanta is a sweet spot between budget and comfort — not the cheapest island but genuinely good value for what you get (beautiful beaches, good food, relaxed atmosphere). For the absolute cheapest island experiences, Koh Mak and Koh Kood in the far east have fewer options but more authentic settings. The Andaman's budget islands include Koh Yao Noi (authentic, cheap food, basic guesthouses) and the developing Koh Jum, which retains a very local character with limited but affordable accommodation.
