How to Get from Bangkok to Phuket
Bangkok to Phuket is 860km south. Flying is the most popular option, but overnight bus and train combinations work well for those with time and budget flexibility.
Quick Answer
What is the best way from Bangkok to Phuket?
For most travellers, fly. The 1-hour 20-minute journey is fast, budget airlines make it very affordable when booked in advance, and the time saving over a 14-hour bus is significant on shorter trips. For budget travellers or those who enjoy the journey, the overnight bus saves on a night's accommodation and covers the distance while you sleep.
Option 1: Fly (Recommended)
Multiple airlines fly Bangkok–Phuket: Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Smile. Budget airlines primarily depart from Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Thai Airways departs from Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Book early on Google Flights or Skyscanner for the best rates.
From Don Mueang Airport, fares of 500–1,200 THB are available when booked 2–4 weeks ahead. Last-minute fares are 2,000–4,000 THB. Getting to Don Mueang from central Bangkok takes 45–60 minutes by taxi or the free shuttle bus from Mo Chit BTS station.
Option 2: Overnight Bus
VIP overnight buses depart Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (access via taxi from Pinklao or Pin Klao BTS) in the early evening and arrive in Phuket the following morning. Journey time is 13–14 hours.
Transport Co. and Phantip Travel are established operators. Seats are wide reclining with blankets and occasional snacks. The bus terminates at Phuket Bus Terminal 2 — take a songthaew or Grab to your beach. Tickets: 600–950 THB.

Getting Around After Arrival
Unlike Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Phuket has limited public transport within the island. Grab works well in tourist areas. The Phuket Smart Bus connects the airport, Phuket Town, and beach areas for 100 THB. Renting a scooter or car gives maximum flexibility but requires a valid licence. Taxis and songthaews serve beach-to-beach routes but negotiate prices in advance as meters are rarely used.
