Ao Nang beach is Krabi province's main tourist centre: a 1.5 km strip of sand backed by restaurants, dive shops, tour agencies, and guesthouses, with limestone karst towers rising dramatically on the horizon. The beach itself is pleasant but not the finest in the area — its real value is as a hub. Longtail boats launch from the beach every few minutes to Railay (15 min), the four islands (2h circuit), and snorkelling spots. The main beachfront road is lively in the evenings with seafood restaurants and cocktail bars. Hat Nopparat Thara, accessible by a 10-minute walk along the headland, offers a longer, quieter beach with shallower development. Ao Nang is excellent for families and couples who want beach life with easy access to the Andaman's finest island experiences.

What Ao Nang Beach Area is like
Most of what makes up an evening here — tour desks, seafood grills, cocktail bars — sits along one beachfront run, so you rarely need a ride to reach dinner. After dark the soundtrack is restaurant terraces and the odd bar rather than a dedicated strip, busier than the beaches either side of it but nothing like a resort town built around drinking.
Who stays here
Suits travellers who want a base with shops, restaurant choice, and onward transport all close together, particularly families and first-timers organising boat trips. Not the place for anyone hoping for hush after dark or a beach without restaurants behind it — both are a short trip away, not on this strip.
Getting around
The beachfront strip and the longtail pier are close enough to walk between. From the pier, boats head to Railay and the surrounding islands through the day. Songthaews run along the main road toward Krabi town, and a hired motorbike is the easiest way to reach anything beyond walking range on this stretch of coast.
Consider instead
- Nopparat Thara — quieter and less built up, though you trade away most of the restaurant and bar choice on offer here.
- Railay — the karst scenery and climbing are in another league, but you lose your rental car or motorbike and any chance of a midnight snack run.
