Quick Answer
Domestic Flights in Thailand
Cheap, fast, and frequent — flying within Thailand is the smart way to cover distance.
Thailand's domestic airline network is extensive and genuinely affordable when booked in advance. AirAsia flash sales can yield Bangkok–Chiang Mai or Bangkok–Phuket flights for $10–15 one-way. Even regular prices (booked 2–4 weeks ahead) average $25–60 for most routes. With Thailand's distances, the time savings vs. bus or train are enormous — and when you factor in saved accommodation costs from overnight journeys, flying often works out cheaper.
Airlines
Thai AirAsia (FD/QZ): Largest budget carrier. Flies from Don Mueang. Very competitive pricing. Good app and website. Nok Air (DD): Budget carrier, mainly domestic routes. Don Mueang based. Slightly smaller network than AirAsia. Bangkok Airways (PG): Premium domestic carrier. Suvarnabhumi based. Higher prices but lounge access even for non-status passengers on some routes. The only airline serving Koh Samui, Sukhothai, and Trat airports. Thai Airways (TG): Full-service carrier. Higher prices, included meals. Suvarnabhumi based. Thai Smile (WE): Thai Airways subsidiary, slightly cheaper, domestic and regional.

Booking Tips
Book directly on the airline website: AirAsia.com, FlyNokAir.com, BangkokAirways.com. Avoid third-party aggregators that add opaque booking fees. Book 3–6 weeks in advance for best prices. AirAsia's Big Sale (held several times per year) has genuinely extraordinary deals — sign up for email alerts. Baggage: all budget airlines charge for checked bags — book your allowance when you book the flight, not at the airport (airport surcharge is significant). Don Mueang processes separately from Suvarnabhumi — confirm which airport your flight uses.
