Quick Answer

Buses in Thailand

The most affordable way to travel between cities — if you have the time.

Thailand has an extensive bus network connecting every province and tourist destination. Long-haul VIP coaches are genuinely comfortable — reclining seats, blankets, meals included, and relatively fast. The challenge is time: Bangkok to Phuket by bus takes 12–13 hours; to Chiang Mai, 9–10 hours. For journeys under 5 hours, buses are often a practical alternative to flying; for anything longer, weigh the time cost carefully.

Types of Buses

VIP 24-seat coach: Widest seats, most legroom, A/C, included snack or meal. 500–1,200 THB for long routes. First class (A/C, 32 seats): Comfortable, A/C, 300–800 THB. Second class (A/C, 44 seats): Basic A/C, 200–500 THB. Ordinary (fan, no A/C): Very cheap, very local, very slow. Tourist minivans: Private 10-seat vans serving popular tourist routes. Faster than buses but cramped. Drivers sometimes reckless. 200–600 THB.

Main Bus Terminals in Bangkok

Mo Chit (Northern Bus Terminal): North and northeast destinations — Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Kanchanaburi. Near Mo Chit BTS station. Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal): South destinations — Hua Hin, Surat Thani, Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai, Malaysia. Take a taxi from central Bangkok (40–60 THB, 20 min). Ekamai (Eastern Bus Terminal): Pattaya, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Ko Chang. Near Ekamai BTS station.

Booking Tickets

Walk-up tickets at any bus terminal — usually seats available except during holidays. Online: Busbud.com, 12Go.asia, or Redbus.in cover most routes. Travel agents on Khao San Road sell tourist bus tickets (convenient but a premium over going direct to the terminal). Popular tourist route operators: Nakhonchai Air (good VIP service), Sombat Tour, Phantip Travel.

Quick Tips

  • VIP buses are worth the extra 100–200 THB for long journeys — the seat comfort difference is significant.
  • Bring a light jacket for A/C buses — they're often extremely cold.
  • Night buses save accommodation costs but can be uncomfortable for sleeping.
  • Minivans are faster but the driving standard is variable — the extra comfort of a full-size coach is worthwhile.
  • Book online for peak season (Songkran, December, New Year) — buses sell out.
