Alcohol Sales Restrictions

Alcohol sales are prohibited nationwide on major Buddhist holidays: Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Asanha Bucha. This applies to all shops, restaurants, and bars. Elections also trigger alcohol bans — check dates closer to your travel.

Buddhist holy day marking a gathering of 1,250 monks. Candle-lit processions at temples across Thailand.

Chakri Memorial Day

วันจักรี

Commemorates King Rama I founding the Chakri dynasty in 1782. Royal ceremonies at the Grand Palace.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

วันสงกรานต์

Thailand's most famous festival — the world's largest water fight. Streets in Bangkok (Silom), Chiang Mai (Old City moat), and beach towns become giant water battles.

Closed: Most businesses close 3–5 days. Banks closed 13–15 April
Travel impact: HIGH — Flights and hotels book out weeks in advance. Prices peak. Plan ahead or stay away
