Shopping in Thailand

Thailand is one of Asia's best shopping destinations — not because of international brands (Singapore and Hong Kong do that better) but because of the quality and value of Thai-made goods. Handwoven silk, intricate lacquerware, hill tribe silverwork, celadon ceramics, herbal beauty products, and custom tailoring represent genuine value and craftsmanship. Markets are where the best shopping happens; understanding what to look for and how prices work makes the difference between great finds and tourist-grade overpriced souvenirs.

What's Worth Buying in Thailand

Thai Silk

Genuine handwoven Thai silk from the Northeast (Khon Kaen region) or from Jim Thompson in Bangkok. Verify authenticity by feel — real silk has a warm lustre and slight irregularity.

Best: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen

Hill Tribe Crafts

Embroidered bags, silver jewellery, and textiles from Akha, Karen, Hmong, and Lisu hill tribes. Best quality from fair-trade social enterprises in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Best: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai

Thai Ceramics (Celadon)

Northern Thailand has a strong celadon ceramic tradition producing distinctive green-glazed bowls, plates, and decorative pieces. Excellent quality-to-price ratio compared to antiques.

Best: Chiang Mai (Sankampaeng Road)

Lacquerware

Traditional lacquered boxes, trays, and bowls with intricate patterns. A Chiang Mai speciality. Quality varies enormously — look for multiple lacquer layers and even application.

Best: Chiang Mai

Tailor-Made Clothing

Bangkok and Phuket have established tailoring industries. A good suit can be made in 2–3 days for 6,000–20,000 THB depending on fabric and tailor quality. Avoid same-day turnarounds.

Best: Bangkok (Sukhumvit, Silom), Phuket

Herbal Products

Tiger Balm (originally Thai-Chinese), traditional herbal medicines, and beauty products using Thai botanicals (galangal, turmeric, lemongrass) make affordable, lightweight gifts.

Best: Nationwide — pharmacies and markets

Antiques & Art

Bangkok's Chatuchak market and the River City shopping complex have the best concentration of genuine antiques. Export restrictions apply to Buddha images and antiques over 200 years old — get documentation.

Best: Bangkok (River City, Chatuchak)

Electronics & Tech

MBK and Pantip Plaza in Bangkok offer good prices on electronics, though the warranty situation for foreign purchases can be complicated. Genuine branded goods at MBK; Pantip for peripherals and software.

Best: Bangkok (MBK, Pantip Plaza)

Bargaining 101

Bargaining is expected at markets, not at fixed-price shops or department stores. The general approach: show genuine interest, ask the price, make a counter-offer at 50–60% of the asking price, and negotiate towards 70–80% of the original. Haggling only on items you intend to buy — walking away after agreeing a price is considered rude. If a vendor accepts your first counter-offer immediately, you've probably gone too high. In tourist areas, initial prices can be 3–5x the local price.
