About Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang is the primary resort beach in Krabi province — a compact, accessible bay backed by dramatic limestone karsts that rise almost vertically from the sea and the jungle. The beach itself is pleasant rather than spectacular: about 2 km of brown-grey sand that disappears at high tide in places, but the scenery of the limestone cliffs towering over the bay gives it a photogenic quality that photographs better than it swims. The real attraction is what Ao Nang provides access to: Railay Beach (10 minutes by longtail), Phra Nang Cave Beach (15 minutes), the Four Islands tour, Phi Phi day trips, and kayaking through the sea caves and mangroves of the Thalane area.

The town behind the beach is compact and well-organised, with a main promenade lined with tour operators, seafood restaurants, bars, massage shops, and accommodation from budget guesthouses to mid-range resorts. Everything you need for a beach holiday is within walking distance. The Noppharat Thara Beach extends north of Ao Nang and is significantly quieter, backed by a shady casuarina tree grove — good for a more relaxed morning walk or swim.

Ao Nang is the transport hub for Krabi province's beaches. The longtail boat pier at the southern end of the main beach is where all boats to Railay and beyond depart. For those arriving at Krabi Airport, Ao Nang is a 30-minute minivan ride and makes a practical base for exploring the whole coast. The evening boat rides back from Railay, watching the karsts turn golden in the sunset, are genuinely memorable.
