About Sairee Beach

Sairee Beach is the longest stretch of sand on Koh Tao and the island's main social hub — a 1.5 km bay on the north-west coast lined with dive schools, beach bungalows, restaurants, bars, and the kind of backpacker infrastructure that has defined the island's reputation since the 1990s. The beach itself is attractive: white-ish sand, clear water (visibility is excellent for snorkelling right off the beach), and a dramatic backdrop of green hills. Longtail boats anchored in the bay and dive boats heading out at dawn create a postcard scene.

The dive school concentration here is remarkable. Dozens of PADI-certified operations line the beach road, competing on price and course quality for the island's core business. An Open Water course costs ฿8,000–12,000 and is typically completed in 3–4 days with ocean dives from the beach. The social dynamic this creates is unusually strong — groups of people doing their Open Water together form friendships rapidly, and the beach bars become a meeting point for newly qualified divers sharing stories. The atmosphere is social, energetic, and warm.

Behind the beach road, Sairee village has expanded significantly: co-working spaces, yoga studios, late-night bars, convenience stores, and laundries cater to a long-stay population of dive instructors, nomads, and those who came for a week and stayed for months. The central junction at Sairee is Koh Tao's main crossroads — everything the island needs passes through here.
