About Lamai
Lamai is Koh Samui's second beach — about 6 km south of Chaweng, and consistently preferred by travellers who want a genuine beach holiday with some nightlife availability but without Chaweng's peak-season intensity. The beach itself stretches about 4 km and is genuinely beautiful: soft white sand, clear turquoise water (in season), and a backdrop of coconut palms. The central section has development behind it, but the southern and northern ends of the beach are quieter and back onto more natural scenery. The grandmothers' rock formation (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) at the southern end is a famous local curiosity.
Lamai's main street runs parallel to the beach and has a functional mix of bars, restaurants, tour operators, and accommodation — similar in type to Chaweng but more compressed and less overwhelming. The nightlife is active but operates on a smaller scale; there is no equivalent to Chaweng's dedicated club strip, but there are beach bars, live music venues, and a string of bars around the central intersection that operate until late. The overall atmosphere is louder than Koh Tao or smaller beaches but noticeably quieter than peak Chaweng.
Long-stay visitors particularly appreciate Lamai for its combination of beach quality, available services, and lower costs than Chaweng. Monthly rentals in Lamai for a pool villa or apartment are meaningfully cheaper than equivalent Chaweng properties. Several wellness centres and Muay Thai training camps have established themselves here, attracting a health-conscious international clientele that adds diversity to what would otherwise be a more purely tourist-facing neighbourhood.
