Chaweng Beach is the most developed beach on Koh Samui — a 7-kilometre sweep of white sand on the east coast that has been Samui's tourism centrepiece since the 1980s. Chaweng town runs parallel to the beach for most of its length. The main strip is a long commercial road (Beach Road) packed with massage shops, pharmacies, tour operators, restaurants, bars, and the entrance roads to beach resorts. Central Festival Shopping Centre anchors the mid-section and provides the most comprehensive mall experience on the island. Chaweng Lake at the northern end has been developed as a lifestyle and dining hub with waterfront restaurants. The Ark Bar and its string of beach club competitors cater to the party-seeking end of the market with daytime pool parties and evening events.
In peak season (December-February) Chaweng can feel overcrowded and the beach chair coverage is extensive. The trade-off is infrastructure: virtually every service you might need as a tourist — medical care, money, transport, booking agents, shopping — is available within minutes. The airport is a 10-minute drive and the ferry ports connect to Ko Tao and Ko Phangan (Koh Samui's party island neighbour) with services every few hours.

What Chaweng is like
Beach Road puts restaurants, the mall, dive and tour shops, and the beach itself within a few minutes of nearly any hotel, and that density is exactly why the noise never really settles — Ark Bar's pool parties run into the evening bar crawl, traffic keeps moving along the strip past midnight, and the loudest stretch of Samui only goes quiet a few hours before dawn.
Who stays here
Suits first-time visitors who want every service on hand, and anyone for whom nightlife is part of the point of the trip. Families chasing a calm beach and travellers who find crowds wearing tend to regret booking here in December–February and would do better choosing a quieter beach for that stretch.
Getting around
Motorbike hire and Grab both work well from here for exploring the ring road, and songthaews run the same route on their own timetable rather than yours. The pier connections to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan leave from nearby, and the airport is close enough that Chaweng works as a first and last-night base as well as a full stay.
