About Thong Sala

Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main port town and commercial centre — the place where ferries arrive from Surat Thani, Koh Samui, and Koh Tao, and where the island's daily life actually happens outside the beach zones. It is not a postcard-pretty destination, but it is a genuinely useful and underrated base: the morning fresh market is excellent, the range of affordable restaurants (particularly for Thai food) beats anything on the resort beaches, and motorbike rental, supermarkets, pharmacies, and all practical services are concentrated here.

The pier area has been cleaned up considerably over recent years and now has a pleasant waterfront with cafes and basic restaurants. A short walk inland through the market streets reveals a working Thai fishing town: motorcycle repair shops, Buddhist temples, Chinese shophouses, and vendors selling everything from fresh coconuts to motorcycle helmets. The contrast with the Full Moon Party beaches an hour's drive away is striking and welcome.

For those staying longer on Koh Phangan — particularly digital nomads and wellness retreat visitors — Thong Sala makes practical sense as a base from which to explore the island by motorbike. The northern yoga areas (Srithanu, Haad Chao Phao) are 20 minutes away; Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party area are 25 minutes south-east; the quiet north coast beaches (Thong Nai Pan, Chaloklum) are 30–45 minutes on well-paved roads. The central location saves money on accommodation while sacrificing nothing practical.
