About Haad Rin

Haad Rin occupies the south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan, a small headland with two beaches back-to-back: Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) on the east, where the Full Moon Party takes place, and Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) on the west, which is quieter and more sheltered. The area has become so synonymous with the Full Moon Party that its character and infrastructure are almost entirely shaped by it — guesthouses, bars, tour operators, tattoo shops, and restaurants all operate on the assumption that most visitors are either here for the party or are recovering from it.

The Full Moon Party itself has been running since the mid-1980s and has grown from a spontaneous gathering to a globally known event attracting 10,000–30,000 people monthly. Haad Rin Nok Beach transforms into a kilometre of beach bars, fire jump ropes, fluorescent body paint stalls, and multiple sound systems playing different genres from reggae to techno. Drinks are served in buckets. The energy is extraordinary and the setting — a tropical beach under a full moon — is genuinely spectacular. The party typically starts around 9pm and runs until past dawn.

Outside Full Moon Party week, Haad Rin is noticeably quieter and somewhat flat — the infrastructure exists for the party and the in-between period can feel like a set being struck after the show. The beach itself is attractive but not Koh Phangan's best, and cheaper accommodation can feel worn. For pure beach quality, the north coast of Koh Phangan (Thong Nai Pan, Chaloklum) is superior. But for the Full Moon experience, Haad Rin is the only location.
