Best Cooking Classes in Thailand

A Thai cooking class is one of travel's most practical souvenirs — skills and recipes you bring home. Here are the best schools by city, what they cost, and what to expect.

Chiang Mai

Thailand's cooking class capital

Chiang Mai is the undisputed best city in Thailand for cooking classes — and arguably one of the world's best. Over 50 cooking schools operate in and around the city, ranging from large-group tourist operations to intimate small-group classes focused on authentic Lanna cuisine. The standard format includes a morning market visit (usually at one of Chiang Mai's traditional fresh markets) followed by a hands-on cooking session preparing 4–6 dishes. Most participants leave with a recipe booklet and the ability to reproduce at least some of what they cooked at home.

Thai Farm Cooking School

Outstanding
Price: 1,000–1,400 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 10 students
Format: Organic farm setting 30 minutes from the city; hands-on in outdoor sala kitchen

You'll learn: 4–5 dishes including a curry paste from scratch; Lanna specialities alongside central Thai classics

The organic farm setting is exceptional. Transport from the Old City is provided. One of the most authentic experiences — you genuinely grind curry paste in a clay mortar.

Asia Scenic Thai Cooking

Excellent
Price: 900–1,200 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 12 students
Format: Half-day or full-day options; market visit included

You'll learn: 5–6 dishes; option to focus on northern Thai (khao soi, sai ua) or general Thai

Excellent English instruction. Very well-reviewed for the northern Thai specialisation option — genuinely different from the standard pad thai and green curry school curriculum.

Zabb-E-Lee Cooking School

Very Good
Price: 800–1,000 THB / half day
Group: Up to 15 students
Format: Market visit; cooking at traditional house kitchen

You'll learn: 5 dishes; good balance of classics and local specialities

One of the most affordable highly-rated options. Good for solo travellers as the communal cooking format is social.

Bangkok

City-based classes with professional kitchen facilities

Bangkok's cooking class scene is more professionally structured than Chiang Mai's — classes typically take place in dedicated teaching kitchens rather than farm settings, and the curriculum tends toward central Thai cuisine (the food most internationally visitors associate with Thailand). Classes range from 2-hour quick introductions to full-day immersions. Bangkok-based classes are particularly good for those wanting to learn the restaurant-quality versions of classic dishes.

Baipai Thai Cooking School

Outstanding
Price: 2,200–2,800 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 12 students
Format: Full professional teaching kitchen; traditional Thai house setting in Ngam Wong Wan area

You'll learn: 5 dishes including at least one soup, one curry, one stir-fry, one salad, one dessert

The most highly regarded cooking school in Bangkok for quality of instruction. The Thai house setting and professional kitchen balance beautifully. Slightly further from the tourist centre but worth the trip.

Silom Thai Cooking School

Very Good
Price: 1,500–2,000 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 10 students
Format: Rooftop kitchen in Silom; central Bangkok location

You'll learn: 4–5 dishes; market visit to Or Tor Kor market at 9am is included in morning sessions

Excellent location for those staying in Silom or Sathorn. The Or Tor Kor market visit is one of Bangkok's best fresh markets — the class is worth taking partly for the market experience alone.

Koh Samui

Island cooking in a tropical setting

Koh Samui's cooking class scene is smaller than Chiang Mai or Bangkok but has grown significantly with the island's tourism boom. Classes typically operate from beachside or garden kitchen settings and lean into the tropical setting as part of the experience. Southern and central Thai dishes are the focus.

Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts (SITCA)

Excellent
Price: 1,800–2,500 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 8 students
Format: Professional teaching kitchen; air-conditioned; optional market visit

You'll learn: 5 dishes; strong dessert component; good vegetarian options available

The most professional cooking school on Koh Samui. The maximum 8-student policy ensures good individual attention. Vegetarian options and dietary accommodations handled well.

Koh Samui Thai Cooking School

Good
Price: 1,200–1,600 THB / half day
Group: Up to 12 students
Format: Garden kitchen setting; relaxed atmosphere

You'll learn: 4 dishes; fruit carving demonstration included

More casual atmosphere than SITCA. Good for travellers who want a fun, social experience over professional instruction. Fruit carving is a bonus skill — genuinely impressive.

Phuket

Southern Thai cuisine in the Andaman's main island

Phuket's cooking classes include the island's distinct Peranakan (Sino-Portuguese) and southern Thai food traditions alongside central Thai classics. The best classes take advantage of Phuket's extraordinary fresh seafood and the influence of the Chinese Hokkien community that shaped Phuket's unique food culture.

Blue Elephant Cooking School

Outstanding
Price: 3,500–4,500 THB / half day
Group: Maximum 12 students
Format: Historic Sino-Portuguese mansion in Phuket Old Town; professional teaching kitchen

You'll learn: 5 dishes including at least one Phuket-specific recipe; restaurant-quality instruction

The Blue Elephant is a Phuket institution — the restaurant is one of the island's most celebrated, and the cooking school maintains the same standard. More expensive than alternatives but the setting, instruction quality, and recipe selection are exceptional. Best cooking class experience in southern Thailand.

Phuket Thai Cookery School

Good
Price: 1,200–1,800 THB / half day
Group: Up to 15 students
Format: Outdoor kitchen; focus on central Thai dishes

You'll learn: 4–5 dishes; market visit to local fresh market included

Much more affordable than Blue Elephant and covers the Thai basics well. Good for budget-conscious travellers who want the cooking class experience without the premium price.

Booking Tips

  • •Book at least 48 hours in advance for small-group classes — they fill quickly, especially November–January and during Songkran.
  • •Mention dietary restrictions when booking. Most schools accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and allergen requirements with advance notice.
  • •Morning classes (starting 8–9am with market visit) are more educational than afternoon sessions. The fresh market context adds significant value.
  • •A recipe booklet is standard — confirm this when booking. You'll thank yourself when trying to recreate dishes at home six months later.
  • •Wear clothes you don't mind getting marked — cooking Thai food involves oils, curry pastes, and chilli juice that stain.
