Do I Need a Visa for Thailand?

Most Western visitors do not need a visa for short stays — but the rules have recently changed and vary by nationality and entry method.

Quick Answer

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

Most Western nationals (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, New Zealand) do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days, with a possible extension to 60 days in total. From late 2024, Thailand extended the visa exemption to 60 days for nationals of many countries including the UK and most European nations. Check the current policy for your specific nationality before travelling.

Visa Exemption: Who Qualifies

Thailand's visa exemption scheme covers nationals of over 60 countries. For most Western nations, the exemption allows a stay of 30 days on arrival, with Thailand having extended this to 60 days for select nationalities in late 2024. The exemption applies automatically at the border — you do not need to apply in advance or pay a fee. You simply present your passport at immigration upon arrival.

Requirements at the border include a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay, proof of onward travel (a return or onward ticket), and sufficient funds for your stay (500 THB per person or 10,000 THB per family is the official requirement, though rarely checked for Western visitors). Since 2025, a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) must be completed online before arrival — this is free and takes a few minutes.

Tourist Visa (TR): For Longer Stays

If you want to stay longer than 30 days (or 60 days with an extension), you need a proper Tourist Visa (TR). This is a 60-day visa available as single-entry or multiple-entry, applied for at a Thai consulate or embassy before travel, or increasingly via the Thailand e-Visa system online. The TR visa costs around USD 40 for single-entry.

A single-entry TR visa can be extended by 30 days at a Thai immigration office in Thailand, giving a maximum stay of 90 days per entry. A multiple-entry TR visa allows you to leave and re-enter Thailand multiple times within its 6-month validity, each time receiving a 60-day stay. This is the most practical option for those planning to spend several months in Thailand with possible trips to neighbouring countries.

Border Run Caution

Using consecutive visa exemptions or tourist visas with repeated border runs is increasingly scrutinised by Thai immigration. Officers have the discretion to refuse entry if they believe you are using tourist visa status as a method of long-term residence. If you intend to live in Thailand long-term, get the appropriate long-stay visa rather than attempting to string together tourist entries.

Other Visa Options

For those planning longer or more structured stays, Thailand offers a range of non-immigrant visas. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), launched in 2024, is a 5-year multiple-entry visa for remote workers and digital nomads, allowing 180-day stays per entry. The Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa offers 10-year status for high-income earners. The Non-OA Retirement Visa is for those 50+. Work visas (Non-B) require employer sponsorship and a work permit.

Education visas (Non-ED) are granted for enrolment at accredited Thai institutions — including language schools and universities. Marriage visas (Non-O based on marriage) are available to foreign spouses of Thai nationals. The Thailand visa system is complex but comprehensive — there is a legal pathway for almost every legitimate reason a foreigner might want to stay.
