About City Center
Chiang Rai's city centre is compact, walkable, and refreshingly unhurried compared to Chiang Mai. The old moat area contains most of the key temples, including Wat Phra Singh and Wat Ngam Mueang. The Night Bazaar on Phahonyothin Road and the Saturday Walking Street near Jet Yod Road are lively evening markets with excellent Northern Thai food — khao soi, sai ua (Northern Thai sausage), and freshly brewed hill tribe coffee. The city is the commercial hub for the Golden Triangle region and a springboard for day trips to the White Temple (8 km south), Blue Temple (5 km east), Black House (13 km north), and the Golden Triangle border point (60 km north). The cool mountain air makes Chiang Rai particularly pleasant from November to February.
