Ferries are the only way to reach Thailand's islands. Here's how to book, which companies are safe, and what each crossing is like.

Thailand has over 1,400 islands, and ferries remain the primary way to reach most of them. Understanding the ferry network saves time, money, and occasionally prevents a miserable experience on an underpowered boat in a monsoon swell. Main ferry operators and routes: Raja Ferry — long-established operator running Donsak (mainland) to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan; car ferries with passenger cabins available; reliable. Lomprayah — high-speed catamaran network connecting Bangkok (via Chumphon or Surat Thani overnight train/bus) with Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui. The most popular route for the Gulf island triangle. Songserm — runs from Surat Thani Tapee pier to Koh Samui; also Donsak-Koh Tao. Andaman side: operators include Andaman Wave Master and Tha Len Ferries connecting Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Ko Yao. Seatran Discovery for Koh Samui-Koh Phangan. Booking: 12go.asia and Lomprayah's own website are the most reliable online booking platforms. Kombilots and Thailand-ferry.com are alternatives. Guesthouses and travel agencies can book same-day. During peak season (December-January, Songkran in April) book at least 3–5 days ahead. Safety: Thai ferry safety has a mixed record. The most serious risks are small, overcrowded speedboats used as "taxi boats" to small islands — these are the least regulated. For main route ferries from major operators, safety standards have improved significantly since the 2009 Koh Tao tragedy prompted regulatory changes. Always check that life jackets are accessible. Monsoon caution: the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) from May-October can see rough seas and ferry suspensions — check the weather and have flexible plans. Gulf islands are generally calmer but not immune to rough weather. Costs: typical ferry crossings 150–600 THB for 1–3 hour journeys; combined bus/ferry packages from Bangkok to islands run 600–1,200 THB.
